Trojans stumble as Bremen wins NSC Tournament

September 27, 2010

BREMEN — Heading into Saturday's final round at the Northern State Conference tennis tournament, Triton still had a shot at a piece of the crown.
The Trojans advanced at all five positions at Thursday's opening round an had a chance to share a piece of the NSC title behind Bremen and Knox, which were ranked 1 and 2 in the conference following round robin play. After such a strong first round showing, Triton lost all of its first matches Saturday at DeSantis Courts, while the host Lions grabbed the 2 doubles championship and runner-up standings at 2 and 3 singles as well as 1 doubles to tie with John Glenn for co-tourney championship honors and win the overall NSC championship for the first time in over a decade.
"It was one of those funny things where three of the guys that we played during the season we beat, but they turned it around and beat us in the first round," said Triton head tennis coach Allen Peckham. "But yet there were two matches where we were beaten by the other guys and we beat them in the tournament. There were some reversals going on... On any given day it's been whoever comes in and plays with confidence or a couple points here and there that's made the difference."
