Trojans start fast in win over Glenn

BOURBON — In a game teeming with subplots, Griffyn Carpenter reached the 1,000-point mark, and the Trojans got off to a quick start and didn’t look back as they took it to Triton head coach Jason Groves’ alma mater Glenn and Falcons’ head coach Travis Hannah, himself a Triton alum.
With inclement weather reeking havoc on both teams’ schedules — indeed, Wednesday’s Northern State Conference game was a rescheduling of a postponement Saturday — both coaches wanted to see their team hit the floor ready.
Only Triton was as the home team opened up on a 22-4 run spanning the game’s first 10 and a half minutes en route to a 54-37 win.
“We only practiced once in the last four days so I was a little concerned and I told the guys before the game, ‘Hey, you guys have got to be focused; you guys have to be more focused today than what you have been in the past,’ and I think they took that to heart and came out and had a good start,” said Groves.
Central to that start was senior guard Carpenter with nine points during the spurt on his way to a team-high 16, ahead of sophomore Clay Yeo’s 15 and senior Jordan Everett’s 10 for the night.
Carpenter’s wing 3 off a Yeo assist at the 1:35 mark of the first quarter put him in some exclusive company as just the third-ever Trojan to reach 1,000 points.
Glenn wasn’t able to find an offensive rhythm until midway through the second frame with an 11-4 run that cut the Falcon’s deficit from 18 to nine at 26-17 by halftime, but they couldn’t cut the Trojans’ lead any further in the NSC loss.
“Our schedule got the best of us tonight,” said Hannah. “We came out cold; we were rusty.
“We were very fortunate to only be down nine points at halftime. I thought our kids battled back during the second quarter.”
Glenn was led by junior guard Josh Anderson’s game-leading 23 points.
The Falcons slip to 4-4 and 1-1 in the conference, while Triton improves to 7-3 with a 2-0 NSC start.
