Trojans recover at Caston

FULTON — Triton football coach Rodney Younis wanted a quick start from his young team.
He got that on offense, but his defensive unit spent much of the its season opener trying to catch up with Caston, and the Comets pulled out the victory 28-20 at the Comet Crater.
“Caston is a solid, physical team,” Younis said. “We just couldn’t slow down their offense in the first half. We made some adjustments at halftime and things got better, but we were behind all night.”
Caston scored quickly in the first quarter on a 20-yard pass from junior quarterback Quentin Douglass to senior Jeremy Gonzalez. That combination worked all evening for the home team.
Triton was led by Bryson Mosier at quarterback in the first quarter. He threw an eight-yard pass to D.J. Riffle for the Trojans’ first score, but Douglass’ extra point kick was blocked.
Caston closed out the scoring in the first quarter with Gonzalez scoring again on a five-yard run. The extra point kick made the score 14-6 at the end of the first quarter.
By halftime Triton was down 21-6, and the deficit quickly increased to 28-6 in the third quarter. Triton’s offense struggled to put anything together even as its defense improved.
By the fourth quarter Mosier found his rhythm at quarterback and things began to click for the Trojans, just as the defense seemed to find its game.
Mosier found several receivers in the fourth quarter to make a run at the Comets. There were completions to Cody Shively, Cain Thorn, Riffle, Grant Stichter and Cole Creighbaum. In the end the fourth quarter rally was not enough, and Caston was able to run out the clock for the victory.
Younis liked his team’s effort in the second half but said that his team would be working on getting more balance between the running and passing games.
Next Friday Triton plays at Northfield High School with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
