Trojans outlast Dragons in OT thriller
ARGOS — The Argos Dragons dropped the opening round game of the Winter Classic to the West Central Trojans 50-44 in overtime Thursday.
“I felt they did a good job all night being the aggressor,” said Argos boys coach Doug Snyder of West Central. “I felt they waited for us. They gave us an opportunity there at the end. I thought we did a good job of finally getting some momentum for us at the end of the first half and again I felt like they waited for us. Then at the end of the game the same thing happened. They had some momentum and then we made a nice little run at the end and executed the out of bounds play and got the three to tie it up, but they allowed us to be in this game.”
West Central opened the game with good ball movement on a 7-0 run in just under two minutes. Argos was able to slow them down a little from there and closed out the quarter down 13-7. West Central started out the second quarter on a 7-2 run, but Argos was able to get things going from there hitting two big 3s at the end of the quarter and went into halftime with a manageable deficit down only three, 21-18. The Trojans weren’t able to start the second half quite as hot as Argos tied it up early when senior Ricky Rice converted on an and-one opportunity from the free throw line. From there it was a back and forth game as neither team was able to get a real edge.
The third quarter ended with the Trojans on top 35-31. The fourth quarter was more of the same with West Central holding a slight lead for most of the quarter.
Argos junior Taylor Ogle converted an old-fashioned three-point play of his own with only 1:05 left which brought the Dragons within three, 42-39. Argos was then able to force a turnover with only 31 seconds remaining.
Then Taylor Ogle hit his biggest shot of the night, nailing a 3-pointer off of the inbounds play to tie the game up at 42 with only 24 seconds remaining. Coach Snyder had this to say about Ogle.
“Taylor is just a hard working kid,” said Snyder. “It was a big shot for him and we need to get him to shoot and score a little more to be successful.”
The Dragons just didn’t have much left in the tank after regulation as West Central was able to outscore them 8-2 in the overtime period to take the victory.
The Argos Dragons’ record now stands at 1-7 and West Central is now 3-5.
Argos will play Knox — which lost to Winamac in another close 52-50 game Thursday — in a consolation game Saturday at West Central at 7 p.m. West Central will take on the Warriors for the tourney championship, also at 7 p.m. at West Central.
