Trojans dominate Bethany Christian, 83-34

December 18, 2013

BOURBON — With Saturday’s snow-out versus Marian, Triton was facing a week-long layover between games. But if head coach Jason Groves felt any concern about how his team might play after its time off, the Trojans quickly put those fears to rest Tuesday night.
In fact, after a 51-19 first half, the only real question remaining at halftime of Triton’s contest with visiting Bethany Christian was whether or not the home team would reach the century mark.
The Trojans fell off their first-half offensive pace to fall shy of dropping 100, but there was little Groves or the home crowd could find to complain about in a complete 83-34 domination of the Bruins at the Trojan Trench.
“I was pleased with our intensity and focus coming out of the gate,” Groves said. “It’s about us — I don’t care who we’re playing, we’ve got to come out and execute and do what we do, and I thought our guys did that tonight. They did a nice job defensively, offensively. We only had one turnover at halftime; that was a good half of basketball.”
The Trojans shared the load offensively, and four players finished in double fitters at the contest led by Darren Harrell’s 17. Mason Yeo finished with 16, and Joey Corder and Tanner Shepherd both put up 15 — the former finishing with a double-double of 11 rebounds — as Triton racked up 21 team assists en route to 52.3 percent accuracy (34-of-65) from the floor with a team-high five assists from Corder and four from Jordan Anderson.
“This was a team effort; this was everybody,” said Triton’s boss. “When you don’t turn the ball over you credit your point guards, your guys handling the ball. We’ve got five different guys who score, it means we’re executing, getting other guys involved more than just one person. That’s nice to see. That’s why I like this group — they’re versatile, they do a lot of things.”
