Triton surges past Bethany Christian

November 30, 2010

GOSHEN — Locked in a 19-all tie at the half, Triton head coach Adam Heckaman decided to take a gamble in the second half.
Switch up to a man-to-man defense to deny easy buckets in the paint and take a chance against Bethany Christian senior small forward Marla ZumFelde.
The gamble worked as sophomore Shana Anderson held ZumFelde to just four of her game-high 14 points after the break, and the Lady Trojans surged past the host Bruins for a 50-39 win at Goshen Monday.
"The ZumFelde girl, Marla, she's a great player, and I was a little scared of matching her man-to-man because I know how good she is, and we realized that it's what we had to do," said Heckaman. "We pressured the other guards a little bit, which caused them to play a little bit rough, I think, and make some decisions that didn't benefit them." Shana (Anderson) did a pretty good job on Marla, and Emily Duff did a great job job of stepping up and going to the basket."
"We just got out-played, we just got out-worked in the second half there," said Bethany head coach Krysten Parson. "We pride ourselves on defense and working hard, and it's not good when teams out-work us. Those are the little things you can take care of. We shouldn't have teams out-working us, and that's what Triton did tonight."
With starting point guard Allison Thacker battling persistent foul trouble throughout the contest and sitting out nearly half the game, and leading scorer Anderson held to single-digit points production, Duff stepped up with a team-high 12 points for Triton.
But all of the Trojans made big contributions in the team win as Anderson and Thacker both finished with nine points, followed by eight points from Hannah Downing and Megan Howdeshell, and Aundrea Sellers gave the team a boost with six rebounds, a blocked shot and a game-high five assists in her first game back from a three-game layover after sustaining a concussion in a win over Oregon-Davis back on November 13.
