Triton routs OD in Yeo’s return

BOURBON — A few questions surrounded Triton star Clay Yeo and his surgically repaired right knee entering the Trojans’ season opener against Oregon-Davis Wednesday.
He and his knee answered them in a major way.
The 6-foot-6 junior guard scored a game-high 29 points, tore down 18 rebounds and shut down Oregon-Davis’ leading returning scorer Craig McIntosh to lead the Trojans to an 89-33 boys basketball win at The Trojan Trench.
“Clay’s coming back from knee surgery and was just recently cleared to play,” Triton head coach Jason Groves said. “Because of the knee he’s had limited mobility. I was wondering how strong he’d be. He hasn’t played organized basketball since the beginning of July, which is a long time to be off. He’s been trying to rehab his knee, and we’ll find time to rest him. He looked good, and did a great job tonight, especially rebounding and defense.”
Tippecanoe Valley transfer Tanner Shepherd scored 25 points, led by a 10-of-11 mark from the free-throw line, in his Triton debut. The 6-3 sophomore forward scored 11 first-quarter points as the Trojans built a 22-10 advantage after eight minutes and also ignited a 19-0 second-half swing that handed Triton a 61-21 lead early in the final frame.
“(Shepherd) is just an athlete,” Groves said. “He’s still picking up everything and still learning our system. I threw a lot at him, and he’s adjusted. He’s a good kid; he works hard. He’s probably one of the best athletes in our school.”
Also for Triton, senior point guard Zak Shively added 11 points, five assists, and four steals in a solid all-around performance, and Seth Glingle reeled in nine caroms for the Trojans, who claimed a 50-19 surplus on the boards.
Meanwhile, the Bobcats finished just 12 of 46 from the field — 4 of 25 from 3-point territory — turned the ball over 23 times, and battled persistent foul trouble in a fast-paced game featuring full-court pressure from both squads.
“Triton is a good team,” first-year OD head coach Matt Crawford said. “Coach Groves does a great job and had his team ready to go.
“We were trying to make it as hard as possible on Yeo and speed up their other guys,” he added. “(Triton) did a good job against our press. Some of the fouls were our defense, but a lot of them were just effort plays and you can’t fault that.”
The pace produced moments of messy play from both sides in the first half, but the Trojans regrouped and ran away after the intermission.
“We didn’t really expect that pace,” Groves said. “It took us off guard. We made some mistakes and had people out of place against the press. We made adjustments, and after halftime our kids came out and did a nice job. Even with the press we only had 13 turnovers and I’m pretty pleased with that.
“Our effort was there and our defense was there,” he said. “We don’t have a lot of experience and we definitely got sloppy at times. Still, I’m pleased with the effort, intensity, and focus. As long as that’s there we can clean up some of the other things.”
Freshman Zachary Johnston scored a team-high nine points for OD. Zachary Taylor secured eight rebounds, and Nolan Coffin swiped four steals for the Bobcats.
“Our kids never gave up,” Crawford said. “Our kids played hard right to the final horn, and that’s a great place to go from here. Everybody was ready to go tonight. We’re not going to stop playing hard, and we will get better. We will get better.”
Both teams play again Tuesday. Triton hosts Plymouth, while OD heads to Lacrosse.
