Triton overcomes poor shooting in NSC win over Bremen

December 8, 2012

BOURBON — It was a rough shooting night at the Trojan Trench Friday night, but the Lady Triton Trojans were able to fight through in a 60-39 win over Bremen.
Triton shot 23.7 percentage from the field in the first half, and Bremen was able to keep it close. At the end of the first half Triton led 26-17.
Lady Trojans coach Adam Heckaman talked about his team’s poor start and how they were able to get things going in the second half.
“We couldn’t find the bottom of the basket,” he said. “We shot really bad in the first half. We shot a little better in the second half. We got our offense into a little bit and our defense kind of set that offense.”
That defense forced 29 turnovers with 21 steals on the night, and those extra possessions proved to be the difference in the game as both teams shot similar percentages from the field as Triton shot 27.4 percent and Bremen shot 26.5 percent.
The Trojans came out firing in the third quarter and were able to push their lead out to 48-23. That scoring punch was led by Taylor Hatfield and Kylie Mason, who each had eight in the quarter and 14 and 16 respectively for the game.
Triton also received a key contribution off the bench from junior Allie Kann, who led the team in rebounds. She played big minutes due to a brief injury and foul trouble for Krystal Sellers. Heckaman has been pleased with her play and willingness to be a contributor when called upon this season.
“Allie stepped in and did a really nice job,” he said. “She does a great job of giving us the minutes she needs to give us and continues to be fine with it. I can’t speak enough to that. You have a lot of kids that want to be out there, but to be successful you have to have kids that are willing to accept the minutes that they get, and she does a really good job of that.”
Bremen was led by junior Sara Slabaugh with 14 points, but it wasn’t enough in the end.
Despite the loss, coach Tonja Lucchese was pleased with the way the Lions played.
“I felt like we played well in the first half, and even in the second half once we got settled down,” she said. “We were working a lot this week on ball movement and not taking quick shots but getting in a few passes. I thought they did a great job of it.”
Bremen’s record is now 0-8 and 0-2 in the NSC, and the team will be looking to get their first win of the season when they host Concord on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. Triton is now 7-2 and 2-0 in the NSC and will be looking for another win when they host Rochester on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
