Triton to host ‘Camp Invention’ during summer

February 19, 2013

BOURBON — Triton Elementary School is hosting a summer learning opportunity for students in grades K-5. Camp Invention, a week-long day camp will be June 3-7.
“This camp has gained a great reputation around our area as an outstanding opportunity for students to explore their love for science in a hands-on, practical learning environment,” said Triton Elementary principal Jeremy Riffle.
He added that in the past few years, Triton students have attended Camp Invention in Plymouth at Riverside Intermediate School. This year, Triton administration decided to bring the camp a little closer to home.
Camp Invention is run by an Ohio-based company but will be led by Triton teachers and several Triton High School students. The cost is $220 per child for the week, and Riffle noted there is a $25 discount for registration by March 28 and a $5 discount for online registration.
“We are in the process of looking at scholarships right now,” said Riffle.
The company needs 40 students signed up to hold the camp. If the camp is canceled for lack of students those who have already paid will receive a full refund.
Riffle pointed out that the camp can help lessen the learning gap that might occur for students during the summer months. The camp teaches critical thinking skills, problem solving, and creatively though activities such as taking apart machines and re-engineering them, building a “spaceship,” and finding environmentally friendly options for a “contaminated” imaginary city.
“For hands-on learners, this (camp) really makes learning fun,” said Riffle. “It allows (students) to come up with solutions for some real challenges. There are some things they will learn that meet (curriculum) standards, but it’s more of just a fun learning opportunity for the students.”
There’s also an opportunity for students in 7th through 9th grade to be “counselors-in-training” paying half the cost of the camp and helping out while experiencing the camp themselves.
The camp runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day, and breakfast and lunch are provided.
Sign up for the camp online at www.campinvention.org, by phone at 1-800-968-4332 or fax 330-849-8528.
Triton Elementary is seeking corporate sponsors for student scholarships. If interested, contact Jeremy Riffle at 574-342-2355.
