Triton can't dam Hoover, Caston

BOURBON — Triton's football team never quite found a way to dam Hoover, or any other Caston player for that matter.
Caston senior running back Trevor Hoover tore up 188 rushing yards on 19 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead the visiting Comets to a 49-28 season-opening win Friday.
All told, Caston, which scored 21 unanswered points to open the game, piled up 378 total yards — 355 on the ground — and sent five different players into the end zone behind a dominating offensive line.
"We just flat out couldn't stop (Caston), and that all starts at the line of scrimmage," Triton head coach Rodney Younis, whose team played a number of freshmen and sophomores said. "They were able to control the line of scrimmage and do whatever they wanted.
"We made so many adjustments, but it wasn't working," he added. "It gets to where you're just playing Jimmies and Joes. But our Jimmies will get better."
Triton, meanwhile, inflicted much of its offensive damage through the air with its new spread. Senior quarterback Zak Shively completed 20-of-38 attempts for 284 yards and three touchdowns.
He twice connected with classmate Marc Lindsey; once for a 27-yarder with 10:19 left in the first half for Triton's initial score, and a second time on a 48-yard catch and carry midway through the fourth quarter to make it a 42-28 game.
Lindsey finished with 116 yards on six grabs.
"We feel that our four receivers, when we spread out, are all four capable of having a big night," Younis said. "Tonight it was Marc. Next week it might be somebody else. Marc and Zak had a good rhythm going."
Caston threatened to break the game wide open early with Josh Andrade's 26-yard scoring scamper to cap off the night's first possession, followed by touchdown touches of 1 and 2 yards from Hoover to give the Comets a 21-0 lead with 1:05 left in the first frame.
The Trojans, though, battled back right before the half. Shively hit Tanner Shepherd for a 15-yard scoring strike and added the two-point conversion pass to younger brother Cody Shively for a 28-14 score with 47.1 seconds left before the break.
Triton then recovered a fumble and Zak Shively hooked up down the middle with Cole Creighbaum who pulled in a 41-yard gain through double coverage to put the Trojans at the Caston 11 inside of 20 seconds. However, a penalty and stiff Caston pressure up front turned away the threat.
"Right before halftime we really had to put it in the end zone," Younis said. "The bottom line is we have to finish drives. If we get the ball in the end zone — we're getting the ball to start the second half — it's a different game. (Caston) got too much pressure on us."
The Trojans scored two more times in the second half with Cody Shively's 3-yard fourth-and-goal blast and Lindsey's second score, but the Comets responded with a 1-yard plunge from Blain Hizer and a 3-yard sneak from Quentin Douglass, respectively.
"Both halves we could have folded it up early," Younis said. "We kept battling. We're going through growing pains; we're going to look good at times, we're going to look bad at times. We're playing a lot of freshmen and sophomores, but I'm not going to use that as an excuse. These guys are varsity players and we will get better."
Also for Triton, Cody Shively rushed for a team-high 78 yards on 12 carries and caught five passes for 59 yards.
Triton hosts Northfield next Friday.
