Tough loss on the road for Pilgrims
PLYMOUTH — It was the best of games, it was the worst of games, and in the end it was a loss for Plymouth’s Pilgrims on the road at Goshen, 6-5.
Getting up early the Pilgrims looked to build even more on the momentum they began to build with two big come-from-behind wins, but couldn’t hold on and suffered a come-from-behind loss.
“You get up four-oh and they got back in it,” said Plymouth coach Ryan Wolfe. “And we didn’t do what we had to do to close it out tonight.”
Plymouth starter Riley Cartwright battled hitters from behind in the count most of the night but left the game with a 5-3 lead. Reliever Braydon Davidson surrendered two in the sixth to tie the score.
“He’s got to get ahead,” said Wolfe of his starter. “He wasn’t throwing his curveball for a strike early, and you have to get ahead with your fastball. If you aren’t throwing that where you want to they’re going to get some base runners.”
Bailey Clark relieved Davidson in the seventh, striking out Goshen shortstop Jorge Pizano but then loaded the bases. Catcher Elijah Nixon’s pick off throw sailed into left field to allow the game-winner.
“We were behind all night in the count,” said Wolfe. “They would get up 2-0 and hit a fastball, and there isn’t a lot you can do when you pitch from behind. I give credit to them — they got guys on base when they needed to and made some things happen and they won.
“We’re going to have these games. We’re going to have games like the last two games; it’s a process.”
Davidson was 3-for-3 on the night at the plate with a pair of doubles and RBIs. Cartwright doubled a run home in his own cause.
Plymouth (4-6) is at home with Wawasee on Wednesday. Goshen is now 3-5.
