Summerfest is Aug. 10-12; schedule complete
BOURBON — Can a small community mount an effective festival? The Triton community — Bourbon, Etna Green, and Tippecanoe — can do it as the Triton Community Summerfest 2012 takes place Aug. 10, 11 and 12 in Bourbon. Area residents and visitors are invited to share a fun experience in small town Midwest America at the Community Park Friday evening, with the official opening of 6:30 p.m. There will be carousel rides open and vendors selling their wares. Stay for the Miss Triton pageant at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $1 or paper products for the food pantry.
Saturday is a day packed with a variety of events. Runners will enjoy the Summerfest 5K run beginning at 7 a.m. at Triton Elementary School. A fun run begins at 8:45 a.m. All proceeds from these runs go to the Jacob Berger Memorial Scholarship Fund. For more information on the runs, call Justina Faulkner at 574-253-2186.
Then, the parade “Triton Spirit — A Can Do Community” begins at 11 a.m. A variety of entries comprise the parade. Check-in will be at the Triton Jr./Sr. High School tennis courts at 9:30. No parade entries will be judged after 10:30. All are welcome to enter this fun parade, and members of the community are invited to decorate their bikes, golf carts, wagons, etc. and participate. There is no entry fee. Judged categories will include walking units, large floats, small floats, cars or trucks, tractors, horses, miscellaneous, and Grand Marshal’s choice.
Following the parade, carnival rides and vendors will be open and ball games will be taking place all day at the park. Several fun events are scheduled for the rest of the day (see Summerfest schedule). A cutie King and Queen contest will be held for children ages 3-5 (Triton area entries only, please). Fun competitive games include the bubble gum contest, the twinkie-eating contest, and the minute-to-win-it. A family show — ”Monkeys and More Exotic Animals” from Chicago will be presented by a performer who was at Miller’s Merry Manor in Plymouth in the spring. A pedal tractor pull will take place at the park basketball court. Saturday will end with a performance by Broken Lace — a live band from South Bend. Crowning the day at dusk will be the fireworks display by the Bourbon Volunteer Fire Department, depending on the status of the burn ban, of course.
Sunday continues the festivities with an eye toward accommodating churchgoers. Enjoy breakfast at the park kitchen by the Bourbon Ladies Auxiliary Post #424 beginning at 7:30 a.m. The Show and Shine car show happens at 11 a.m., with registration beginning at 8 a.m. For more information on the car show, call Lonny Berkey at 574-342-0064. A cutie baby contest for ages 0-2 will be held at noon (Triton area entries only, please). In the afternoon, John Begley from Goshen will present his show “Illusions to Illustrate — The Gospel of Christ.” The carnival, vendors, and ball games will be ongoing all day.
Summerfest director Kathryn Chapman Dreibelbis said, “All are welcome to come and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere at this well-established small-town festival. We’d love to see you there.”
