Don S. Balka, Emeritus Mathematics Professor, Saint Maryâs College, South Bend, Indiana, began his two-year term as the president of TODOS: Mathematics for ALL on April 25. The mission of TODOS is to advocate for an equitable and high quality mathematics education for all studentsâin particular, Hispanic/Latino studentsâby increasing the equity awareness of educators and their ability to foster studentsâ proficiency in rigorous and coherent mathematics.
Balka has held leadership positions in TODOS, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM) and School Science and Mathematics Association (SSMA). While on the faculty of Saint Maryâs College, he strived to dispel womenâs beliefs that they could not succeed in mathematics. For three years, Balka was involved with training teachers of English Language Learners (ELL) in mathematics content and pedagogy in a program entitled Reach for the Numbers, a partnership between the Saint Maryâs College Mathematics Department and the South Bend Community School Corporation. Earlier in his teaching career, he completed a post-doctorate masterâs thesis involving Hispanic migrant students in northern Indiana.
He learned a great deal about equity and, as a NCTM Board member, served on the Equity Team that drafted the position statement on Equity and amassed the current equity portfolio. He also drafted the updated ELL position statement. He facilitated a meeting of the Coalition for Equity and Excellence in Mathematics Education (CEEME), a group of leaders with a significant stake in carrying out missions similar to that of TODOS.

Competitors awed by Sycamore Hills
Greg Jones | High school sports editor
FORT WAYNE â There is definitely a lot of respect for Sycamore Hills Golf Club from those involved in Saturdayâs Canterbury Invitational.
âItâs a difficult course,â Canterburyâs Austin West said. âJack Nicklaus designed it, and he made it that you have to put the ball in the right position on every hole. You have to be consistent from tee to green.â
Sycamore Hills is a nationally renowned golf course that will play host to the Junior PGA Championship for a third straight year in late July and early August. Sycamore Hills will also have the U.S. Girls Junior Championship again, and it played host to the 2009 Womenâs State Team Championship.
Westâs 73 was one stroke behind NorthWoodâs Dylan Gessingerâs 72 for medalist honors, and the Cavaliers (328) finished third behind Northridgeâs 326.
âItâs a great measurement for my game,â West said. âShooting 73 on this course isnât bad when you didnât have your complete âAâ game for the entire 18 holes. But it teaches you that in order to play well on a course like this, you have to have your âAâ game for all 18 holes.â
NorthWood tied with Canterbury with a 328 but finished second on a tiebreaker. Twin Lakes was fourth with a 333, and Bloomington North was fifth at 334.
âThis golf course is so hard that (the players) get excited and try to overpower it, and when you try to overpower this course it starts to eat away at you, and then big numbers turn into bigger numbers,â said Carroll coach Steve Vernasco, whose team finished sixth out of the nine teams with a 339.
âWhen you play on a golf course that is rated in the top 100, you just get excited. But itâs a challenge, and you look at it like it is a learning experience.â
Vernasco said Sycamore Hills is a tough course to play, especially for high school golfers, but was set up fairly for the prep level. He said it is all about managing the nerves when the going gets tough for golfers.
âWe preach how to manage your game,â he said. âWe practice hitting irons off the tees in practice and play that way so when you play a course like this where the fairways are important to hit that they are used to hitting the clubs they need to hit.â
Stephen Shupert led the Chargers with an 83.
âThis is a whole different course than any other course,â Shupert said. âYou just have to be perfect in your iron game. You have to hit the right iron into the greens or you will have some crazy shots. It is a second-shot golf course.â

Recently I received a dismissal letter in the mail from the Ancilla Nursing program. I, just like the many other girls who also received this type of letter, was very upset but also irate. Not specifically due to the fact that we were dismissed but because of how we were dismissed and the monotonous manner in which the director of nursing took. The 2010 ASN pass rates for Ancilla were brought to my attention once the semester came to an end not only to prove a point but to open my eyes. This is a National Pass Rate flow sheet that shows Associate Degree Programs in the state of Indiana and standard deviation below the National Pass Rates. As evidence shows, Ancilla has been below this pass rate for the past few years but still justified raising their passing standard; pointing fingers at students instead of teachers.
I am writing this because I believe there is a lot to be looked into when it comes to this college and I hope that by getting the word out and possibly getting help, I can in return help others to not make the same mistake I, like multiple other students, did.

Thanks for this informative information. I live over an hour away and have been trying to get more information about Ancilla /nursing program. I cant seem to find any good or bad which I thought was a bit odd. I wish more people would take the time to post on the www.allnurses.com website.
Ancilla is expensive and I would not qualify for any financial aid. Plus I would have to commute which is an extra expense. I would not mind paying the tuition, gas, and commuting if I knew I was getting into a quality program with quality instructors. Plus a great school that values the students.

Dear Sir;
A few weeks ago someone from the JGHS band told me my daughter's picture was in the Pilot, but I must have missed it. I have been looking online but cannot find it. Her name is Celena Sherwood and she is a senior, is in marching band, guard, and theater. I think it was on a Wednesday that the picture was published, and maybe on the front page. Can you help me find it?
Thank you,

As the leaves start to reveal their brilliant colors; thoughts often turn to colder weather making the autumn and winter seasons a particularly busy time of year for Community Action.
As if ushered in by the cooler temperatures, Northwest Indiana Community Actionâs (NWICA) telephones begin to ring announcing clients, neighbors and friends. They call for a variety of reasons: 2-1-1 Information and Assistance field calls for free Flu Shot vouchers, of which they distributed over 900 last year. Our Family Caregiver Support Program Specialists register hard working caregivers for a celebration and informational event in their honor. Our Long Term Care Options and Benefits Counselors help lead those eligible through the October-December 2011 Medicare Open Enrollment process.
There are also record numbers of calls for our Energy Assistance (EAP) and Weatherization Programs. Unfortunately, there are so many local families who do not have the ability to complete payments on their natural gas utility costs. There are more who live in homes that cannot withstand the cold due to lack of insulation or other mechanical gas appliance issues. If you live here, you know that northwest Indiana winters can quickly become brutally cold and dangerously snow-laden. These families face the realization that they will be cold this winter unless they obtain some household financial assistance so, they turn to us.
Indianaâs Energy Assistance Program will open for applicants on November 1st, 2011. By this time last year, NWICAâs Energy Assistance Program had helped almost 3,000 Northwest Indiana households and was on target to help over 22,500. This year, due to anticipated federal and state cuts, NWICA will not be able to assist nearly the same amount of our most vulnerable.
âAnticipated budget cuts for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) and other vital community action programs are having an impact on those least able to handle it in all the communities we serve,â said Gary Olund, NWICA President/CEO. âWe are actively seeking solutions to help ease the burden on elderly, low wage earners, the disabled and those with young children but the reality is that we will not be able to assist as we have at past yearsâ levels.â
NIWCA operates several programs for the elderly, low or fixed income and disabled families in a six county service area. Please continue to call our 2-1-1 Information and Assistance Call Center for up-to- date information and referral services to find out how we can assist your family this season.

ELKHART, Ind. â If you planned to participate in the 31st Annual Great Race Sports Festival on September 24 and 25, you now have a little more time to prepare.
Ronald E. Schmanske, president and CEO of The Great Race, announced earlier this week that road officials cannot guarantee that roadwork along the race courses will be completed by the planned race dates.
âAs a result of this new information, weâve decided our responsibility for the safety of the participants is too great a risk,â Schmanske said.
The new race date is now under discussion. Race officials will announce the new date upon confirmation. Comments or questions can be directed to Ron at The Great Race Inc., email address: greatraceservices@gmail.com.
Meanwhile, fundraising for the pledge contest, which allows contestants to choose the local charity of their choice to pledge to, will continue. The pledge deadline will also be announced once the new date for the race is confirmed. No pledge money is used to cover The Great Race administrative or expense funds; 100 percent of all pledges raised go directly to The Great Race charity of each contestantâs choice.
Past organizations that have benefitted from The Great Race Pledge Program are: Elkhart Parks, Junior Achievement, Goshen Boys & Girls Club, Daimonâs Kids, Youth for Christ, Oaklawn and the YMCA.
About The Great Race Sports Festival:
The Great Race features three different race courses and a variety of events to challenge runners, walkers, cyclists and in-line skaters. There are also events for swimming, canoeing/kayaking, and team events for basketball and tug-of-war. The Great Race Inc. is a nonprofit organization that helps raise funds to support other Elkhart County nonprofit organizations. The Great Race Inc., office is located in the industrial park near County Road 17 and Middlebury Street at the intersection of Durrant and Green Streets in Elkhart.

RACE FOR CONGO is an 8 man cycling relay team that will be riding day and night August 1 - August 7 from Bend, Oregon to Baltimore, Maryland. They are riding to raise awareness of the conflict in Democratic Republic of Congo and to raise money for a World Relief peace initiative.
More than a decade of conflict in the Eastern DRC has uprooted millions of people, caused widespread disease and claimed over 5.4 million lives. Though blessed with land rich in mineral resources, 80% of Congolese live in extreme poverty conditions. In the middle of such instability and upheaval, World Relief is working with the church to respond to urgent needs. As one of the few remaining social infrastructures, the local church in DRC makes the most of limited resources to serve the vulnerable and stand as a beacon of hope and refuge.
Your local support of the riders on the evening of August 5th as they travel through towns such as Hamlet, Grovertown and Plymouth, Indiana will be greatly appreciated.
Experienced cyclists are welcome to join the ride with the understanding that they will be keeping an 18mph average and that riders will ride at their own risk!

South Bend, Ind. â Michiana-area residents and visitors looking for a reason to head outdoors and experience the city of South Bend in a fast-paced, energy-infused way unlike any other can do so by participating in the second annual Urban Adventure Games â a race consisting of a unique cross between an athletic competition or race and a city-wide scavenger hunt will be held on Saturday, July 30, 2011. Registration for the 2011 Urban Adventure Games is now available online at www.urbanadventuregames.com.
Starting and ending at Coveleski Stadium, the second annual Urban Adventure Games race will lead participants through the city of South Bend from checkpoint to checkpoint, testing them both physically and mentally. Participants will do some biking, running, paddling, climbing and even flying throughout the city, while simultaneously finding hidden clues, answering trivia questions and completing tasks along the way. Participants will check in at various checkpoints located across the course to mark their progress.
âSome cities hold fun, walk-in-the-park type scavenger hunts. Other cities have rough and rugged athletic races or events. The Urban Adventure Games were created specifically as a way to merge both concepts into one event that could appeal to anyone wanting to experience South Bend in a fun, active way,â said Kelly Ball, event director for Urban Adventure Games. âParticipants donât need to be super athletes to enjoy the activities, but will certainly enjoy some lively and creative events throughout the race that showcase all of the fun things to do in South Bend.â
Participants compete in the race in teams of two and should prepare to bring a bicycle, bicycle helmet, bike lock, athletic clothing, a cell phone for emergencies, a back pack, water and $15 cash for each team member to ensure race participants are prepared for a fun-filled, active day.
Race participants can make the day as challenging or as fun as they want with four new levels of competition this year. Those four divisions include:
Open Division
This original âfun-pacedâ race is at the heart of what Urban Adventure is all about. Youâll have a blast as you traverse South Bend completing both silly and challenging checkpoints. Whether you compete for the victory, or just ride for the views, the Open Division is less about breaking records, and more about making amazing memories.
You should be in good physical shape, able to run 3 miles and bike 10 miles.
Elite Division
This fierce âfast-pacedâ race is for the thrill-seeking Urban Adventurers. Youâll test your limits as you speed around South Bend and beyond participating in a variety of physical and mental checkpoints. Time, strategy, and willpower are crucial in the Elite Division. Will your team have what it takes to become the next UAG champions?
You should be in good physical shape, able to run 5 miles and bike 20 miles.
Family Division
This unforgettable âfamily-pacedâ race turns the average family into full-fledged Urban Adventurers. Youâll break a sweat and bond together as you experience South Bend in a whole new way. The Family Division encourages an adult to team up with their teen (13-17). As you bike the course and conquer the checkpoints, this race is sure to bring you closer together!
You should be in good physical shape, able to run 2 miles and bike 5 miles.
Junior Division
This awesome âfriendly-pacedâ race allows young Urban Adventurers to race and keep pace with their friends. If youâre age 13-17, feel the need for speed, and are willing to tackle some crazy tasks, then cap off your summer vacation with a bang. Sign up for the Junior Division - It was made especially for you.
You should be in good physical shape, able to run 2 miles and bike 5 miles.
The Urban Adventure Games are fast becoming a summer tradition in the South Bend area with hundreds of teams competing each of the last two years and participants offering feedback ranging from âa fun-filled dayâ to âthe best thing that South Bend has ever done.â The third annual Urban Adventure Games is on pace to surpass last yearâs registration numbers, expected to have more than double the participants in this yearâs event.
About Urban Adventure Games
Created in 2009, the Urban Adventure Games were conceived and organized by a team of community organizers, business owners and outdoor enthusiasts by pooling their talents and resources to put together an adventure race like no other in the region. The Urban Adventure Games were designed to help residents and visitors experience more of the city of South Bend in one day than they may experience in an entire summer, calling upon race participants to take part in a day of fun that will challenge their body and their mind. Since its conception, the Urban Adventure Race has grown into the Urban Adventure Games, which includes the race consisting of a unique cross between an athletic competition or race and a city-wide scavenger hunt. Two North Judson-San Pierre Academic Super Bowl squads have qualified for the State competition to be held at Purdue University in West Lafayette on Saturday, May 7. The Fine Arts and Social Studies squads placed third and second in their Class 3 division against six other schools, but their scores placed them in the top seven competitors in the State, thus earning them a berth at the State competition. The 2011 topic of study is Latin America.
Fine Arts squad members Jennifer Atkinson, Sarah Green, Jacob Kieszkwoski, Steven Miller, and Rebecca Mullens are coached by Sheila Akers. The Social Studies squad members, coached by Kim Miller, are Emma Allender, Maddie Allender, Katie Bejes, Matt Bejes, Cody Hendershott, Jon Hileman, and Chris Lippelt.

After being closed for over two years, the South Bend motor Speedway will roar back to life after the Brown Family purchased the facility back late in 2010. An aggressive schedule is planned with over 23 events featuring Late Models, Sportsman, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks and 4 Cylinder Front Wheel Drive cars. Special events are also planned for both winged and non-winged Sprint Cars, Modifieds, and Great Lakes Super Trucks. The ever popular Demolition Derby will kick off the history making season with a $2.500 to win âSpring Crashâ on Saturday, April 30.
There is a rich racing history at the speedway. Throughout its 60 years, the track has been host to some very famous drivers. Indy 500 veterans, Gordon Johncock and Mel Kenyon, former NASCAR champion, Darrell Waltrip have competed, and current Sprint Cup drivers, Ryan Newman, David Stremme and Tony Raines each got their start at the famous high banked oval. The speedway also holds claim to being home to the nations first female points champion in a headline division when Cindy Stremme won the title back in the mid 80âs.
Long time fans at the facility will note one major change from past years. That is the switch from Friday night to Saturday. âItâs a business decision,â promoter Steve Brown, says. âWe all work full time jobs and itâs just not practical to try and run on Fridays. Besides, Saturday is race night.â While some veterans may question the logic of switching to Saturdays when there are other tracks that also run then, itâs actually a good thing. âIn past years, before the switch to daylight savings time, South Bend was on the same time as Michigan City and LaPorte. With the switch to DST, that puts them an hour behind us all year. By the time fans and drivers get off work on Friday nights, itâs already too late to make the show. Now that makes it less of a problem.â
The Brown Family are no strangers to local race fans. As former promoters at the M40 Speedway in Jones, Michigan, theyâve earned the respect of the racing community. âThis is a family operation,â Steve says, âAnd we want parents to bring their kids and enjoy a quality racing program in a family atmosphere.â And there will be plenty of special activities for the kids. From special autograph sessions to spectacular fireworks displays and bicycle races, thereâs something planned for everyone.
The 2011 season kicks off this Saturday, April 23 with an open house and open practice session from 10 am to dusk. Any type of race car is welcome to practice and fans are invited to check out the facility and meet the staff. There is a $20 fee to get into the pits but grandstand admission is free. For more information, go to www.racesouthbendmotorspeedway.com or call the Speedway Hotline at 574-234-0269.

EVERY CHILD, EVERY DAY
A COMMUNITY SUMMIT ON CHILDREN
Over 200 individuals involved in assisting children in Elkhart County are expected to participate in the third annual Community Summit on Children. Sponsored by the Elkhart County Juvenile Court, this yearâs event is entitled Every Child, Every Day. It will be held on February 10, 2011, at 9:00 a.m. at the Maple City Chapel in Goshen.
"We all need to be able to accomplish more with fewer resources," says Deborah Domine, Juvenile Magistrate. "This Summit will provide an opportunity to learn about low-cost and no-cost services that are available here in Elkhart County for our residents."
All Elkhart County youth care workers, youth care providers, educators, participants in the juvenile justice system, case managers, and any other participants in the work of bettering the health and welfare of children are encouraged to attend.
Topics to be addressed include collaboration training, the connection between education and involvement in the Juvenile Justice System, and a Service Fair, including informational activities hosted by local service providers.
A. Hasan Davis, Deputy Commissioner of Operations for the Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice will be the featured lunchtime speaker. Mr. Davis had an early history of challenges, including learning disabilities, a pre-teen arrest and expulsion from alternative school and college. Beginning with a change in his own attitude, Davis has graduated from Berea College and University of Kentucky Law School.
The summit is being funded through an Indiana Supreme Court Improvement Grant, and organized with the help of community partners serving youth who come together through the Elkhart County Childrenâs Roundtable. Circuit Court Judge Terry Shewmaker founded the Childrenâs Roundtable in 1999. All juvenile cases in Elkhart County are assigned to the Circuit Court, and Juvenile Court Magistrate Deborah Domine. The Roundtable participants include representatives of area schools, Bashor Home, Oaklawn, the Department of Child and Family Services, CAPS, and involved members of the community.
Individuals interested in attending should contact the Juvenile Court at 523-2244. There is a $10 charge, which includes a box lunch.

Don Balka Assumes Presidency of TODOS: Mathematics for ALL
May 6, 2012 by Anonymous, 1 week 3 days ago
Comment: 14038

Ancilla College

Sincerely,
Former ACNS

Thanks for this informative information. I live over an hour away and have been trying to get more information about Ancilla /nursing program. I cant seem to find any good or bad which I thought was a bit odd. I wish more people would take the time to post on the www.allnurses.com website.
Ancilla is expensive and I would not qualify for any financial aid. Plus I would have to commute which is an extra expense. I would not mind paying the tuition, gas, and commuting if I knew I was getting into a quality program with quality instructors. Plus a great school that values the students.

The Great Race will be postponed.
RACE FOR CONGO, a bike ride across America comes to Indiana
July 29, 2011 by Anonymous, 41 weeks 5 days ago
Comment: 13462
Learn more at www.worldrelief.org/raceforcongo
Your local support of the riders on the evening of August 5th as they travel through towns such as Hamlet, Grovertown and Plymouth, Indiana will be greatly appreciated.
Experienced cyclists are welcome to join the ride with the understanding that they will be keeping an 18mph average and that riders will ride at their own risk!
Follow the route at: http://worldrelief.org/raceforcongo/route
Donations will go directly to fund the work of World Relief in Congo.

Moms and families can trade coupons they have received from various community services such as WIC, prenatal classes, Dr's appointments and immunizations.
Please bring a new baby item, such as diapers, ones-sies, blankets, car seats, toys, etc, to donate to the Tot Shop. Of course, tax-deductible cash donations will also be accepted.
Urban Adventure Games Coming To South Bend!

Respect for life and a heart of compassion are the driving forces behind the announcement of Les Trumpâs intent to run for Marshall County Coroner in 2012.
Les has been a resident of Marshall County since his birth on September 10, 1956 in Plymouth, Indiana to Roy D & Nina M Trump. He graduated from LaVille High School in 1974 and began working for Bremen Bearings as a grinder and later as a Union Steward. He was a Volunteer Fireman for the Lake of the Woods Fire Department and in 1977 he became a certified EMT through IVY Tech.
In 1978 he began working for Mishler Ambulance Service and Funeral Home in Bremen where he was an EMT, assisted with funerals and drove for their Medical Transport Service. He became a certified CPR Instructor for both the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross. He was certified in IV/Defibrillation in 1984 and in 1987 taught 2 First Responderâs classes. In 1994 Gregory Mishler awarded him with a plaque for 20 years of service as an Emergency Medical Technician.
In 1995 he moved to Plymouth and learned advanced skills through a Paramedic Class. In 1997 he became a part-time volunteer for Plymouth EMS, a part-time employee for VanGilder Funeral Home and started his current full-time position with the Marshall County Sheriffâs Department as a Turnkey/Dispatcher and is certified as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher for their 911 center.

Les served on the Marshall County Emergency Management Advisory Board during the years of 2001-2006, is an associate member of the Marshall County FOP since 2001, and an Associate Member of the Sheriffâs Association since 2007. He also works part-time as a dispatcher for the Plymouth Police Department joining them in 2008.
Les is a member of the Nappanee Missionary Church in Nappanee where he is involved as part of their Worship Choir. By attending a 13 week course on Grief Sharing offered by the church he has found new insight not only on how to deal with the grief of losing his Father in 2009 but also how to encourage and support others as they grieve.
He is married to Jackie (Abair) and will be celebrating their 30th Anniversary this year in July. They have 3 daughters, and one granddaughter.
As Marshall County Coroner Les would not only investigate death but care for the families of the deceased with compassion, understanding, sincerity and trust.

NEW OWNERS BRING NEW LIFE TO SOUTH BEND MOTOR SPEEDWAY

For: Immediate release:
By Scott Binkley (RacerBear31@yahoo.com)
