St. Michael's pastor gets reassigned to Fort Wayne

June 25, 2013

PLYMOUTH — Father William Kummer, who has served as the pastor at St. Michael Catholic church in Plymouth has been selected to take over for a Fort Wayne parish embattled by sexual abuse allegations.

According to news reports, Kummer will replace Rev. Cornelius Ryan, who was removed from his position at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hessen Cassel on June 10.

Ryan admitted to allegations of child abuse after being confronted, according to Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades of the Diocese of Fort Wayne - South Bend. The allegations reportedly involve an incident in Africa about 20 years ago, according to news reports.

Kummer will take over on July 16. He previously pastored at St. John the Baptist Catholic church in Fort Wayne.

On Monday, Rhoades clarified a few details about the allegations against Ryan, a member of the Congregation of Holy Cross, which is based in South Bend. Ryan had served as administrator at St. Joseph since December 2011.
