Spyders win one, lose one at sectional

Plymouth Post 27 got off to a 1-1 start at the American Legion Baseball Sectional at Bill Nixon Field on Friday and Saturday.
Post 27 opened with a 12-1 loss to Highland Post 180 but bounced back with a 7-4 win over Mishawaka Post 161. Complete results from the tournament were not available at time of press deadline, but the Diamond Spyders will be eligible to play in the regional tournament this weekend as hosts of that tourney.
Plymouth’s win over Mishawaka saw the Spyders rack up 13 hits, including a home run and a double by Tanner Hampton, who went 3-for-4 at the plate, an eighth-inning triple by Eric Knepper, and doubles from Nick Pritz and Kyle Liedtky.
Jason Ferguson got the win on the mound surrendering five hits with five walks versus three strikeouts in seven innings, and Liedtky got the save giving up four hits with a walk while fanning two over the final two innings.
That win followed an earlier 12-1 loss in seven innings to Highland Friday in which the Spyders recorded only five hits.
Hampton scored Plymouth its lone run after leading off the fourth with a double. Clayton Adamson took the pitching loss giving up seven hits and a walk for five runs lasting into the fifth. The Spyders also committed five errors for three unearned runs in that tourney-opening loss.
