LAKEVILLE — During a high school football game, when two of the best players on the opposing team have names like Biggs and Sturdy and they are not the 6-foot-4, 310-pound lineman or the 6-1, 220-pound fullback, you could be in trouble.
That is the situation LaVille High School found itself in Friday night as the 12th-ranked Class A and defending sectional-champion South Central Satellites dished out a 40-0 season-opening defeat on the Lancers behind a punishing running game.
“They are exactly what we thought they were,” said Mark Reddy after his first game as LaVille’s head coach. “They’re big, they’re physical, and they’re fast. We knew they would be aggressive up front on defense. We knew number 30 (Ethan Biggs) was a tough back to bring down and that number 34 (fullback Hazen Imes) ran the ball hard so we didn’t get anything we didn’t expect.”
Biggs, who became South Central’s all-time rushing leader last year as a junior, ran for a 60-yard touchdown on the game’s second play, had a 39-yard TD romp on his final carry of the night and had a 74-yarder called back in between. Still, the standout senior covered 237 yards on just 13 carries to lead the way for the visitors. Imes added an even 100 yards, 80 coming on the first play of the second half to put SC ahead by four touchdowns at the time. The Satellites, who did not attempt a pass, grounded out 431 total rushing yards — many of which were behind senior stalwart lineman, Dalton Moore.
LaVille’s best chance of turning the momentum around came midway through the third quarter. Facing a 4th-and-9, Andrew Hostetler zig-zagged for a beautiful 65-yard touchdown run, but an illegal block nullified the score. Two plays later, South Central’s Stephen Williams raced 60 yards after recovering a Lancer fumble.
“On our side, we didn’t execute well,” added Reddy. “We are the kind of football team that if we execute and do everything right, we’ll be in position to be in the game. We’re not good enough to just show up and win. We put the ball on the ground (three fumbles) and had some key penalties that cost us. We just cannot make the kind of mistakes we did and win. Some of it was typical first game stuff. We had a good (preseason) camp, but we didn’t make some reads on defense that we should and a lot of things broke down. I felt that we played hard, but we have a lot to clean up.”
Hostetler led LaVille in rushing with 69 hard-earned yards on 18 carries and was 5-for-8 passing for another 58 yards. Levi Lucas and Josh Dudeck recovered fumbles on the defensive side.
Next week the Lancers travel to Gary to play Bowman Academy.
