South Central dimes Argos at Triton tourney
BOURBON — Argos fell behind early and never recovered in a 12-2 Triton Sectional loss to South Central Tuesday.
South Central capitalized on eight hits, two errors and 12 walks to dime the young Lady Dragons in four and a half innings at the Sectional 51 semifinal. The Satellites scratched out five runs on three hits and six walks batting through the order in the first to put the pressure on Argos early. Argos answered back with two runs off a pair of RBI singles by Raelynn LaFrance and Dani Fishburn in the top of the second, but it was already too late for the Dragons, who were only able to put up six total hits against Satellites pitchers Haley Bauer and Madisyn Walter
“Too late,” said Argos head softball coach Alyssa Duncan. “We’ve been having that problem all year. I think it’s just a confidence thing. They’re afraid of making errors. We’re trying to get over that right now; I still have a really young team.”
Argos’ sophomore pitcher Allison Flower struggled with a total of 12 walks in the loss, as South Central batters remained patient at the plate. The Satellites scored four runs in the second and three more in the third and fourth to put the game away early. Clean-up hitter Alex Snyder finished with three doubles and a walk and three runs.
Argos was led at the plate by LaFrance, who singled and scored in the second, and Fishburn, who went 2 for 2 with an RBI in the season-ending loss.
“Dani’s actually been in a slump until a couple games ago and then she started to come out of it,” said Duncan. “She’s a junior so she knows that happens, and she’s been really working hard to fix that, and it definitely showed tonight.
“LaFrance has been hitting well for us. She’s a freshman. She’ll definitely become a good hitter and a catcher for us.”
South Central moves on to play Triton in the sectional championship tonight at 5:30 p.m. Argos closes its season out at 3-12 with the loss and bids good-bye to one senior in shortstop Latisha Shepherd.
“Latisha has been a great leader for our team,” said Duncan. “She’s our lone senior, and she’s tried to keep the girls enthused and up as much as she can even though we do have trouble at times. Team-wise, we are rebuilding.
“It’s getting better, but slowly.”
