MARSHALL CO. â€” The Marshall County probation and prosecution departments will soon be experiencing changes in their employees.
Both departments have experienced turnover due to employees taking maternity leave or family leave. Mary Jane Walsworth of the probation department and Nelson Chipman of the prosecution department asked county council members Tuesday for permission to fill the vacant positions.
â€śWeâ€™ve had a gap in our office since late August,â€ť said Walsworth, adding that one of her probation officers left her maternity leave. â€śWeâ€™ve been using a college intern to fill the gaps temporarily.â€ť
Walsworth said that she has other staff that could fill the open probation officer position. Two of her current secretaries have bachelorâ€™s degrees. If that were to happen, the position she would need to fill would be a secretarial position.
Penny Lukenbill, county auditor, said that both the probation officer and/or the clerical position would need to be posted internally for five days. If no suitable candidate is found among current county employees in five days, the position(s) could be advertised.
Council members approved both positions.
Nelson Chipman represented Prosecutor Dave Holmes to request a similar change in the prosecution department. He explained that a current full-time case worker wishes to become part-time. He does have a current part-time case worker who is interested in filling the full-time position.
â€śThe part-time employee has been there over seven months now, has been trained, and can move to full-time immediately,â€ť said Chipman. â€śIt seems that this would be a good situation for everyone involved.â€ť
Chipman also asked if the 90-day new employee probation pay could be waived.
Council members granted his request, but will wait to consider waiving the probation pay until the part-time employee has accepted the full-time position.
