Sectional 2nd helpings: Cavs host Whiting

CULVER — After an unprecedented 5-0 start to the season, Culver Community hit the skids in Week 6.
Beset by injuries and other personnel problems, the Cavaliers went on a three-game losing streak and fell out of the Class A rankings in the process.
But Culver’s roster returned to full strength, the Cavs righted the ship in Week 9 with their first regular-season win over Northern State Conference foe LaVille in three years, and opened Sectional 33 play with a 49-7 rout over Lake Central on the road last week.
And they’ve learned some lessons along the way.
“Even though we’ve had to deal with adversity all year, I don’t think there’s ever been a point that we ever felt that we aren’t a good football team. We have a good team; it’s just a matter of playing hard and believing in ourselves,” said Culver head football coach Andy Thomas. “I think one thing we’ve gained in the last couple weeks, we’ve been able to get back on track a little bit and gain some confidence. I think we feel like if we can play well, we feel like we can win against any team on our schedule. We found out along the way that we can’t just show up and expect to win. We’ve got to bring a complete effort for four full quarters to be successful.”
