Rockies take 2nd at Super Eight
PLYMOUTH — They’ve had decent turnouts before, Plymouth’s wrestling team has. But this season, there’s a new twist.
“Our young kids are really coming through for us,” says Plymouth coach Bob Read. “We had a real good incoming freshman class and we had some kids who committed to the off-season, so it has made a difference.”
More than just a difference. If early results are any indication — like a second-place finish at Saturday’s Plymouth Classic Super Dual — the Rockies could be one of the better teams in northern Indiana.
They aren’t going to knock off a powerhouse like No. 12-ranked Mishawaka, which won Saturday’s eight-team tournament at Plymouth’s gym with a 5-0 record.
But with over 50 guys on the roster and a new commitment to winning, Plymouth will be a handful for just about everybody else.
Fresh from a huge victory over arch-rival Goshen last Thursday, the Rockies picked up four more wins, improving their season record to 9-2.
They beat Peru, Munster, South Bend Riley and outlasted Northern Lakes Conference foe Northridge, 39-34.
Though they lost to Region power Lowell, 36-30, in a match which easily could have gone the other way, all in all it was a pretty successful day.
“The thing I really like is the way our kids are competing,” said Read. “They scramble. They aren’t going to give up.”
Three Rockies rolled through the tourney with 5-0 records – John Mills in the 106-pound weight class, Cody Allmon at 113, and DeAndre Pickford, who alternated between 220 and 285.
And all of Mills’ victories came by fall.
It may not be remembered as a signature victory, but Plymouth showed its character against Riley. Trailing 23-12 midway through the match, the Rockies battled back, winning six straight individual bouts to pull out a 38-23 decision. Allmon pinned Riley’s Jared Baney in 47 seconds to close it out.
“We have some pretty vocal leaders,” said Read. “(Michael) Garrity at 152, Aaron Houin (182) get things going. DeAndre Pickford, he’s a senior, he leads.
“I don’t think we’ve even come close to hitting our stride yet,” added Read. “We’ve got some kids who wrestle with an exciting style. You think you’ve got ‘em, and then they are scrambling and get out. That sort of lights the fuse and things get rolling.”
Read says he is still tinkering with the Rockies’ lineup. But once everybody’s is place, it could be a fun winter season.
“We’re improving every week,” he said.
