Rockies lose heartbreaker to Elkhart Memorial

PLYMOUTH — Kyle Barry’s near game-tying shot went just wide in the final seconds, and Plymouth suffered a 3-2 Northern Lakes Conference loss to visiting Elkhart Memorial Thursday.
“We actually missed a couple opportunities in the first half,” said Plymouth Boys Soccer Coach Josh Martin. “Maynor Galleano had a couple shots that we just missed by a hair that could’ve maybe changed the game. With 21 seconds left in the game, Kyle Vanlue played a long ball into the box, and Kyle Barry got on the end of it, took a pretty close range shot and just missed off the post, and they killed the last 20 seconds of the game.”
Senior Brandon Baird scored both of Plymouth’s goals at the contest, finding the back of the net on an unassisted score in the 50th minute to cut Memorial’s lead to 2-1 and tallying another unassisted goal in the 70th minute to bring the score to its final margin.
David Diaz and Jonathan Bela scored for the Chargers within a six-minute span late in the first half to put the Rockies down 2-0 at the intermission.
“Once again, we’re still struggling with that problem getting scored on first and having to chase after games, but once again our guys showed a lot of heart and they battled back in the game and they never quit, and we almost tied it up with a pretty death-defying shot in the final seconds,” said Martin.
While Memorial moves to 5-6 on the year, Plymouth slips to 4-5-3 on the season with an 0-3 conference mark. The Rockies will resume Northern Lakes Conference play at Concord Tuesday at 5 p.m.
