Rockies finish 2nd at Blueberry
PLYMOUTH — Plymouth finished second place in the B Group at the Blueberry Festival Boys Soccer Tournament, missing the championship to Kankakee Valley on a score differential criterion Monday.
The Rockies beat South Bend Clay 3-0 Monday, while Kankakee Valley beat Lakeland Christian 6-4 to clinch the group championship. LaVille won the Group A championship, meanwhile, with victories over Culver Community, Mishawaka and Winamac, including the Lancers’ 5-1 win over the Cavaliers Monday.
Plymouth tied with Kankakee Valley 2-2 in its first game and edged out Lakeland Christian 2-1 in its second game Saturday to stay in championship contention heading into Monday’s final round.
Oscar Aguilar scored a pair of unassisted goals in the 18th and 46th minutes as the Rockies battled to a draw with eventual champion Kankakee Valley.
“That was a tough one. We gave up a penalty kick in the first half and went down 2-0 and had to chase that game,” said Plymouth Head Boys Soccer Coach Josh Martin. “That was one of those games that we talk about showing some spine. Our kids did a really good job of finding Oscar up front. He was real patient, he beat a couple guys one on one, kept his composure and put two away.”
Andrew Youst scored on a Maynor Aleano assist for Plymouth to tie up the Rockies’ contest with Lakeland 1-1 in the fourth minute. Alex Orellana found the back of the net on a Doug Andrews helper in the 36th minute, and Plymouth held off Lakeland to become the eventual runner-up at the tourney.
Defender Kyle Barry was carted off after overheating early in the contest as temperatures reached over 100 degrees.
“At halftime we were definitely talking about managing that game, that we didn’t need extra goals,” said Martin. “This was our game to throw away or win based on the kind of decisions that we made. It was tough all day because it was really brutal hot… It was tough; it was hard to keep consistency in the game just because you’d have guys in for 10 minutes and then you have to bring them out.”
The Rockies will play on the road at Argos Wednesday.
