CULVER — Robert Kepler, 90, Culver, passed away at his home at 3:25 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013.
Born the third of five children of Guy Vernon Kepler and Trella Elizabeth Thompson Kepler, “Bob” was born Dec. 28, 1922 in a log cabin on the family farm on 18th Road east of Culver, Union Township, Marshall County. Bob’s family included his parents, brother Bill (Pat) Kepler, sisters Helen (Phil) Peer, Letty (Ralph) Masten and Jane (Cecil) Warner.
Bob attended the one-room Maxinkuckee School all his grade years except for one year at Santa Anna School. He was a member of Culver High School class of 1941. After high school, he worked on the farm under a one-year deferment before entering the U.S. Navy where he served on a PC boat in the South Pacific from December 1944-June 1946.
Bob worked with his father on the family farm. He also worked for Everett Norris at Maxinkuckee Orchard on Peach Road. It was when he was helping out an injured farmer near Bourbon that mutual friends introduced him to Doris Metheny, the woman who stayed by his side throughout the remainder of his life. Bob and Doris were married in the EUB church in Bourbon on Sunday, April 3, 1949.
At the time of their marriage Bob worked for the Indiana State Highway Department for a few years followed by employment with Marshall County Farm Bureau Cooperative. Throughout his work life, he also farmed the 80 acres on which he was born and the 100 acres of his parents. He began milking cows, raising dairy cattle, hogs, beef, sheep, chickens and rabbits. Ever the lover of animals, conversations revolved around his warm feelings for animals and farming. Reminiscing of earlier days farming with mules Pat and Jack are stories fondly remembered by his family. In 1955 Bob purchased a Chevy school bus and began 24 years of driving Culver school children.
Bob was a member of Santa Anna United Methodist Church, Marshall County Farm Bureau and the Conservation Club. He was also Union Township’s 4-H tractor leader for many years.
Survivors include his wife of more than 63 years, Doris, sons Vaughn Lee (Pam) Kepler and Mark Allen (Roberta) Kepler, four grandchildren, Molly (Spud) Armstrong, Matthew, Scott and Luke Kepler, and one great-granddaughter Lindy Armstrong. In addition, Bob has many nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, brother Bill, sister Letty and brothers-in-law Phil Peer and Ralph Masten.
The funeral service is at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 21, 2013, at Earl-Grossman Funeral Home in Argos, with Pastor Henry Sprunger of Santa Anna Church officiating.
Visitation is 2-6 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013. Burial will be at Poplar Grove Cemetery located on State Road 10, east of Culver where many of his ancestors are buried. Bob’s family roots go back to the first settlers of Union Township. Memorial contributions may be made to Santa Anna United Methodist Church or Hope Hospice of Rochester.
