Riester's special stars and stripes

November 4, 2012

Kay Riester of Culver stands with an American flag and certificate signifying the flag was flown in honor of Riester herself and her late husband Gene (who served during World War II, including at Pearl Harbor). The flag was flown May 18, 2011, over Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 26 in Kandahar, Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom.

The flag and certificate were presented to Kay by her grandson Cortney, who served 13 years in the U.S. Navy, completing his time and returning to Culver this past January. Cortney also had the two framed, and today they’re proudly displayed in Kay’s Lake Shore Drive home.
