CGA wins regional
Culver Girls Academy won its first girls tennis regional championship since 2007 with a 4-1 defeat of Warsaw at the Lady Eagles’ home regional at the Gable Tennis Complex Wednesday.
Culver now advances to the LaPorte Semistate to face Penn Saturday at 10 a.m.
CGA won on all three singles courts as Sonia Shen beat Sarah Hartle 6-4, 6-3 in 1 singles play, Natalia Lopez-Yanez handed Jacqueline Sasso a 6-1, 6-0 defeat at 2 singles, and Paulina Cano trumped Sarah Boyle in a 7-1 second-set tiebreaker for a 6-1, 7-6 (1) victory at 3 singles.
The Eagles’ final win came at 2 doubles as Rachel Simon and Carlota Silva made short work of  Taylor Moore and Abbi Baum 6-1, 6-1.
Also at Wednesday’s regional, Knox’s Miranda Shepherd and Chelsea Collins beat Northfield’s Alyssa Richter and Leanne Beck 7-5, 6-2 to stay alive in the IHSAA’s 22nd annual doubles tournament.
Singles: 1. Sonia Shen (CGA) beat Sarah Hartle 6-4, 6-3; 2. Natalia Lopez-Yanez (CGA)  beat Jacqueline Sasso 6-1, 6-0;  3. Paulina Cano (CGA) beat Sarah Boyle 6-1, 7-6 (7-1).
Doubles: 1. Lindsay Sciarra-Olivia Wallin (W) beat Pita Navarro-Maria Solis 6-0, 6-2; 2. Rachel Simon-Carlota Silva (CGA)  beat Taylor Moore-Abbi Baum 6-1, 6-1.
Records: CGA 11-7, Warsaw 11-7.
Non-team doubles tournament
Miranda Shepherd-Chelsea Collins (Knox) beat Alyssa Richter-Leanne Beck (Northfield) 7-5, 6-2.
