Berkey homer lifts Westview past LaVille
Jake Berkey’s three-run shot in the bottom of the fifth brought Westview back from a 1-0 deficit, and the Warriors made it stand up in a 3-1 defeat of LaVille in the opener on their home turf at Class 2A Sectional 35 at Topeka Wednesday night.
Ryan Bettcher had a double and an RBI but took the tough loss on the mound for the Lancers, giving up just two hits while striking out 14 for his team.
Tarrin Beachy earned the pitching win for Westview, fanning seven while surrendering three walks and four hits — to Bettcher, Chris Bailey, Josh Chrisman and Jackson Jones — as the Warriors advanced to play Prairie Heights, which beat Central Noble 14-4 in six innings Wednesday, at tonight’s early semifinal, with a nightcap between Bremen and Fremont scheduled to follow at 7 p.m.

OD falls in 5 to South Central
Adam Clindaniel, Austin Hanna and Bret Walters each had two hits, and Walters drove in three runs as South Central ousted Oregon-Davis 10-0 in a five-inning opener at the Class A Culver Community Sectional Wednesday.
Cameron Clark took the loss on the mound for Oregon-Davis, which was out-hit 10-4. He also doubled in the Bobcats’ season-closer.
The Satellites advance to play host Culver in a semifinal Monday at 10 a.m.
Triton plays Marquette Catholic in a quarterfinal today at 5:30 p.m.

Plymouth Sectional games moved back
Wednesday’s Class 3A Plymouth Sectional opener between the host Pilgrims and John Glenn was rained out Wednesday night, with the make-up scheduled for tonight at 7 p.m.
Today’s originally-scheduled match-ups between CMA and Mishawaka Marian and New Prairie and Jimtown have been moved back a day to Friday.

Girls lacrosse
CGA advances to state
Morgan Osborn recorded a Texas hat trick with four goals, and Culver Girls Academy advanced to the state semifinals with a 12-3 win over South Bend St. Joseph at the Girls Lacrosse Northern Regional Finals Wednesday in Culver.
Annie Morsches notched three goals and three assists, while Saralena Barry recorded two goals and three assists for CGA, which will play in the state tourney May 31 at Brebeuf.
Alexis Conley made 12 saves in the losing effort for St. Joe.

Glenn gets Culver
Three days after earning runner-up honors at the Northern State Conference Tournament, John Glenn beat out NSC foe Culver Community once more at Mystic Hills, 178-207 in a dual meet Wednesday night.
Tyler Prentkowski shot 39 to lead the field for Glenn, while Austen Hayes and Ben Weiss carded respective scores of 43 and 45, and Michael Schmeltz and Nick VanderVelden both shot 51 for the Falcons.
Trent Elliott led Culver with a 44, followed by Cody Peterson, Kenny VanDePutte and Tristan Schultz with respective scores of 53, 54 and 56.

LaVille wins tri-meet
LaVille’s boys golf team topped New Prairie by three strokes to earn a pair of wins in a three-way meet with the Cougars and Jimtown at McCormick Creek Wednesday.
Zach Gurtner fired a 2-over 38 to lead the Lancers, while Cam Gurtner shot 40, and Zach Hostetler and Tyler Thomas turned in dual 42s for the Lancers.

Youth baseball
Plymouth 12U beats Nappanee again
The Plymouth Yoder’s 12U travel baseball team earned its second win over Nappanee Saturday, this time winning 7-0.
Ezra Winkle and Cam Dennie combined for the shutout with Winkle taking the win for Plymouth.
Clay Hilliard finished with two hits and three RBIs to lead Plymouth at the plate, while Dennie and Evan Ziegler each finished with a hit and an RBI, and Kam Vanlue notched two hits.
