Slabaugh, Lucchese lead Lady Lions in sectional opener
Bremen jumped out to a 17-11 lead at the first quarter break and held off Prairie Heights down the stretch for a 58-53 victory at the Lady Lionsâ€™ opener at the Class 2A Central Noble Sectional Tuesday night.
Sara Slabaugh and Ashley Lucchese put up 17 and 16 points, respectively, and Chelsea Huppert finished with eight as the Lions earned back-to-back wins for just the second time this season.
Lucchese knocked down three 3s, and Slabaugh hit two as Bremen finished with five triples in the win. The Lions also converted 17-of-23 free throws in a game which featured a combined 42 fouls and 53 charity tosses between the two teams.
They now advance to play Northern State Conference foe LaVille Friday at 6 p.m.
Prairie Heights was led by Shawna Carbone with 19 points and Kayla Freeney with 15. The team closes at 10-12.

Freshman boys basketball
Plymouth 9th falls to LaPorte
The Plymouth freshmen boys basketball team suffered a tough loss Tuesday night against LaPorte, 47-41.
The game was tied at the end of the third quarter, but in the end it was the Slicers that made the plays to come out on top.
Matt Friar and Braydon Davidson both had 11 points, and Cam Eveland chipped in nine points for the Pilgrims. Plymouth slipped to 13-4 on the season with the loss.
7th grade girls basketball
Lady Red Storm 7th beats Indian Springs
The Lincoln seventh grade girls basketball team earned a 35-15 win over Indian Springs recently.
Leading the Lady Red Storm in scoring were Courtney Cook with 12 points and Alli Andrews with eight.
Bremen takes 2 losses
The Bremen seventh grade girls basketball team lost a pair of games recently, falling to NorthWood by a competitive 17-15 margin and losing to Triton 32-14.
Mackenzie Moren led the Lady Lions versus NorthWood with six points, and Sara Knepper added four. Bailey Fritter had a season-high eight rebounds and Bremenâ€™s defense finished with four steals.
Knepper scored three points in the loss to Triton, while Lexi Miller led her teamâ€™s offense with four points. Fritter and Tyra Adams had five rebounds apiece.
The girls drop to 2-5 on the year and 1-1 against Northern State Conference schools.

Starr powers Peregrines
Plymouthâ€™s Alex Starr finished with a game-high 21 points on lights-out shooting from beyond the arc, and the Purdue University Calumet womenâ€™s basketball team showed no signs of taking it easy with a 68-33 victory over Holy Cross on Wednesday night.Starr led 13 Peregrines in the scoring column. The 5-8 senior came into the game ranked fifth on PUCâ€™s all-time scoring list, and she finished 5 of 6 from beyond the arc on the way to her game-best 21.
