Relay will bring survivors, supporters together
PLYMOUTH — The annual Marshall County Relay for Life is this Saturday and Sunday at Centennial Park in Plymouth.
Organizer Becky Milliser said that her favorite part of the overnight event is spending time with other cancer survivors and their friends and family.
“I just love the whole relay experience, just hearing other peoples stories and what they have gone through,” said Milliser. “We are kind of like a family.”
The Relay will be held in the field near the tennis courts at the park. Teams can start setting up at 12 p.m., but the event will start at 6 p.m. Teams and anyone else interested will walk laps throughout the night in honor or in memory of cancer victims. Other activities are planned, including special laps like “Zumba lap” and “Wild Wig Lap,” and sack races, a bubble gum contest, and the luminaria ceremony at dark.
The lighting of the luminarias symbolizes loved ones that are either fighting cancer or have passed away due to cancer. They are lit at dark and kept lit throughout the night, as a sign that those participating have hope to fight the disease.
“The luminary ceremony is probably my most favorite — it’s very emotional and it really does seem to get the point across,” said Milliser.
Milliser pointed out that spectators are welcome to attend the Relay, and a team is not necessary to walk laps.
