MARSHALL CO. — Jordan Rans, 27, of Plymouth is returning to familiar grounds as he steps into the position of Marshall County Deputy Sheriff.
He got his start in law enforcement at the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, working there from 2007 to 2011, when he joined the Plymouth Police Department as a patrolman.
Rans beat out 10 other applicants for the position when the merit board extended a conditional offer of employment to him Tuesday night. According to Sheriff Tom Chamberlin, Rans must only complete a drug screening before starting his new position the week of Nov. 26.
“We had 11 applications total, and all applicants took (performance) tests,” said Chamberlin Wednesday. “From that, three were interviewed.”
“I feel pretty lucky that I was picked,” said Rans. “There were a lot of qualified people (for the position).”
Chamberlin said that Rans was chosen because he knows the system as a past employee, presents himself professionally, and has initiative.
“I decided that the Sheriff’s Department was home, and that’s where I wanted to be,” said Rans about his decision to apply for the job. “I plan on staying with the Sheriff’s Department for a long time and my goal is to retire from there.”
He said he is looking forward to patrolling the county.
Rans first became interested in law enforcement in high school, and later studied criminal justice at Ball State University.
“I got to do ride-alongs with police and see what cops actually do, and that fueled my desire to get into law enforcement,” said Rans.
Rans lives in Plymouth with his wife Meghan and 3-month-old son, Brody.
