Public meeting tonight on handicap accessibilty

January 7, 2013

MARSHALL CO. — Since signing a resolution to do so in 2011, members of county government have been making sure county buildings are handicap-accessible.
“In the last year or so, we have installed automatic doors at the Marshall County Building, and they will soon be installed at the museum and the courthouse, too,” said County Auditor Penny Lukenbill Thursday.
Tonight at 6:30 p.m., the public is invited to comment on handicap access at a meeting that will be held in Room 203 of the county building. During this meeting, the county’s transitional plan to meet the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements will be presented and discussed.
Part of the 23-page transitional plan details work already done to create more accessible areas for people with disabilities.
“The County has modified all sidewalks leading to the county buildings for handicapped accessibility, and all public restrooms are equipped with handicapped facilities and accessible,” reads part of the plan.
Lukenbill noted that not all the changes are just for the wheelchair-bound. An alarm system in the county building is capable of warning those with hearing difficulties because it incorporates flashing lights as well as a sounding alarm.
Doug Masterson, county maintenance supervisor, is the ADA coordinator. County residences who wish to file a grievance should submit them to Masterson within 60 days after the violation.
Lukenbill said that the process to make county buildings handicap-accessible is ongoing.
“Some of the older buildings require more planning,” said Lukenbill.
To look over the county’s transitional plan, visit the county website, www.co.marshall.in.us or find the plan at the Plymouth Public Library. All are welcome to comment at the meeting tonight, and written comments will be accepted through 4 p.m. Feb. 7 at the Auditor’s office in the Marshall County Building. Written comments can also be mailed to: Marshall County Auditor’s Office, Re: ADA Transition Plan, 112 W. Jefferson St., Room 205, Plymouth.
