Probst leads Marian in season-ending defeat of LaVille

LAKEVILLE — LaVille boys soccer head coach Kevin Christy needed just two words to sum up his team’s sectional loss Wednesday – backside goals.
Mishawaka Marian senior Sheehan Probst scored three of them – the game-winner in the 74th minute – to eliminate the host Lancers, 3-2, from Class A Sectional 36 competition at Newton Park.
With the victory, the Knights advance to Saturday’s championship tilt against Bethany Christian, itself an 8-2 victor over John Glenn Wednesday.
“(Marian’s) set pieces, corners, throws, they’re all set up for one touch,” Christy said. “They’re looking for the backside goals, and we gave up three of them. They controlled the ball well. They did exactly what we expected them to do.
“My hat’s off to Marian,” he added. “They played a great game, and it’s going to be a great championship game Saturday. We’re just disappointed that it won’t be us wearing the white.”
For the Lancers, senior Jaime Martinez twice gave his team the lead. He beat Marian keeper Connor Camp to a through ball and lofted it high into the net to break a scoreless tie in the 47th minute. He struck again from 30 yards in the 70th minute, tucking the ball just beneath the crossbar for a 2-1 LaVille lead.
“Jaime, that kid works hard, plays hard, and truly enjoys being on the field,” Christy said. “He’s worked to earn everything he’s gotten. His first goal was a through that he got past the keeper and scored. The second was an awesome shot. It had to be from 25 or 30 yards. The keeper made a good effort and tipped it, but it went in. It was an excellent shot, a beautiful shot.”
However, Probst answered each LaVille goal, scoring equalizers in the 58th and 72nd minutes for Marian, which out-shot the Lancers 21-8.
LaVille senior keeper Joe Vest piled up 11 saves, several of the exceptional variety, but had very little chance against Probst, who scored all three goals from short range.
“I could say Joe made some outstanding saves tonight, but I could say that about every game he’s played in his career,” Christy said. “He’s a standout goalkeeper. I’ve been saying he’s one of the best in the region, and I’m going to continue to say it. He’s an amazing talent. I’m very proud of his effort.”
The Lancers wrap up the season 13-3-2 and now bid farewell to 11 seniors, including high-scoring Jordyn Williams.
“We showed a lot of heart; 13-3-2 is not anything to be upset about,” Christy said. “Everybody who played played really hard. The energy was up; the fans were good for both teams.
“Jordyn Williams, although he didn’t score tonight, was up there scoring with anybody in the state,” he added. “I feel for our seniors. I hate to see them go, and I’m disappointed to see the season end, but I’m proud of our team.”
Bethany 8, John Glenn 2
Bethany scored five unanswered goals in the first 31 minutes to bounce John Glenn 8-2 in the opener Wednesday.
James Frey and AJ Strycker both scored for the Falcons.
