Tyler Prentkowski of Glenn and LaVille’s Cameron Gurtner both advanced as top three individuals from non-advancing teams, while Penn took top team honors with a 308, Mishawaka Marian was second in the team standings with a 317, and Elkhart Memorial claimed the last team regional qualification in third place with a 322.
Prentkowski shaved two strokes off his front side score on the back nine at Erskine to post a 2-over 72 for overall runner-up honors and the first individual regional berth, while Gurtner got off to a strong start with a 38 on the front side on his way to a 78 for fifth place overall and the last ticket out to next Thursday’s Warsaw Regional at Stonehenge.
The juniors will vie for another top-three spot among individuals from non-advancing teams at next week’s regional and a chance to move on to the state finals June 11 at the Legends Golf Club in Franklin. Friday’s finish was Prentkowski’s second straight regional qualification after advancing to the LaPorte Regional as a sophomore last year. It was Gurtner’s first such berth after cousin Zach made the individual cut for the Lancers last season.
Meanwhile Friday, the rest of the LaVille and Glenn squads closed out the year in seventh and fifth place, respectively.
Michael Schmeltz shot an 86 behind Prentkowski’s 72, while Ben Weiss carded an 89 and Nick VanderVelden and Austen Hayes both shot 90 as the Falcons put up a team score of 337.
Zach Gurtner and Zach Hostetler both shot 82 for LaVille, while Tyler Thomas shot 102 for the Lancers, who put up a 344 team score. Dustin Royer shot 121 in the fifth spot for LaVille.
