Post 27 sweeps Jay Randolph in doubleheader

June 27, 2011

PLYMOUTH — Plymouth Post 27 ran its win streak to three straight games with a doubleheader sweep of Jay Randolph Post 507 Sunday, beating the visitors 3-0 in the opener and 14-2 in a five-inning nightcap at Bill Nixon Field.
James Hackworth pitched a complete game shutout in game one, striking out 15 with just one walk while scattering three hits, while Post 27 broke through with a run in the third and added two more in the bottom of the fourth for the win.
Brock Anson was hit by a pitch and scored on an infield error with two outs— one of five errors by Jay Randolph in game one — to scratch out Plymouth’s first run of the night, while Nicholas Latham drove in Chase Peters on a single up the middle and was in turn driven home on a sacrifice fly to right from Aaron Christenberry in the fourth.
Jay Randolph’s Eli Jones had the only extra base hit of the game with a two-out double to left on a 1-0 offering from Hackworth in the top of the sixth but was left stranded at second. Taylor Lefever also reached second on a single and an error in the top of the seventh as one of only two Post 507 players to reach scoring position in the loss.
Post 27 plated 13 runs between the second and third frames of the second contest, recording all nine of its hits at the game and capitalizing on five walks and two hit batsmen during the span.
Sean Rogers doubled and scored in both of the big innings, finishing 2 for 3 with a pair of runs and two RBI, both coming on his two-base tap up the middle in the third. Christenberry hit an RBI triple to deep center in the third for Plymouth’s only other extra base hit of the game.
Jacob Eaton gave up six hits and five walks working through four innings for the win on the mound, while Brock Anson shut the door on the visitors in the seventh to preserve the mercy-rule victory.
Ben Saliwanchik finished 2 for 2 with two runs and three RBI in the abbreviated nightcap.
Plymouth will hit the road Tuesday for a game against the Ohio River Bandits at Parkview Stadium at 4 p.m. Post 27 will return home to play Ottawa Post 63 on July 1 at 5 p.m. in the Patriot Tournament opener at Bill Nixon Field.
