Plymouth squeeks past Dragons at Argos Sectional semi
ARGOS — Plymouth squeaked past Argos, while Culver Girls Academy routed LaVille to set up a Lady Rockies-Eagles championship at the Argos Girls Soccer Sectional Semifinals Thursday at Eugene Snyder Field.
PLYMOUTH 2, ARGOS 1
Trisha Neidlinger switched from the backfield to forward, and history repeated itself as the senior scored the game-winner for a 2-1 Plymouth win in a classic back-and-forth battle between the Rockies and the Dragons.
Actually Neidlinger scored both of Plymouth's goals Thursday.
She notched her first goal of the night on a lob that just squeezed in the far upper V over the outstretched hand of Argos keeper Karlee VanDerWeele to tie the game up 1-all in the 62nd minute, then cooly put away the clincher on a forward assist from Courtney Hersick with less than four minutes remaining on the game clock.
"Trisha Neidlinger is one of our seniors and a great leader on our team, and she's played sweeper for us for the last month," said Plymouth head coach Joe Morris. "Trisha had our game-winner last year against Argos so we took a little gamble and pulled Trisha up front tonight and let her play forward, and she got both of our goals. Both of them were pretty goals."
"I don't know that we missed a lot of breakaways tonight; it was a little stouter defense," said Argos head coach Jon Alcorn. "Really as the game went on, obviously it's a back-and-forth long ball game, but we started putting some possessions together and I think we really broke down their attack as well, except the long ball. Well, guess what happened? We got a long ball counter, and that's a classic soccer thing, you start pressuring, maybe you have the better play but then you get a long ball counter. That's just too bad because I think our girls deserved a better result, but I always think that."
