WARSAW — The Plymouth High School gymnastics team competed at Warsaw Thursday in just their second dual meet of the season, losing the varsity contest 98.3-86.25 but winning the JV contest 49.8-25.2.
While the loss dropped the Lady Pilgrims to 0-2 on the year, Plymouth still had some strong individual performances in the loss, led by its underclassmen. Freshman Nicky Davis continued her outstanding rookie campaign by taking home first place ribbons in all events except beam, where she finished second.
Although Davis was the only individual to place at the meet, sophomore Traci Longanecker had a no-fall beam routine on her way to a personal record score on the event. Sophomores Katie Galloway and Rachael Principe — in just her second meet since returning from an injury to start the season — scored points for Plymouth on two separate events, and freshman Megan Biglane scored her first-ever varsity points on floor exercise as she posted Plymouth's third highest score on the event.
"We didn't have a very good meet last weekend at the Lakeland Invite," said Plymouth head gymnastics coach Tony McPherron. "I challenged the girls this week, and I'm so proud of how they responded. They all did really well tonight and we had several personal records or season-highs. We lost to a team with, I believe, four seniors while we competed three freshman, four sophomores and one junior on our varsity level tonight. With a young team, all I can ask is for them to respond to adversity and continue to improve. They did both this week."
The Lady Pilgrims set a new season-high team total in the meet with their 86.25. In addition, they had their fewest falls on the year, scoring only five in the varsity competition.
"It's amazing how much better you can score when you stay on," laughed Longanecker after her beam routine. "Doctor (McPherron) keeps getting on us about our falls, and we've been working very hard. It's good to finally see the results of what he's been having us work on."
Plymouth will next venture to Logansport for the six-team Logan Invite on Saturday. The meet will start at 10 a.m. at the Berry Bowl. The Pilgrims will then face top five-ranked LaPorte on Monday at home in a meet rescheduled from last week's weather. That meet will start at 6:30 p.m.
