Plymouth boys show improvement in 6th-place finish at NLC swim meet

DUNLAP — Led by four scoring swims from lone senior Poaolo Palmitessa, Plymouth tallied a 112 to finish sixth out of eight teams, while Northridge won with a dominant 521 at the Northern Lakes Conference Championships Saturday at Concord.
Palmitessa opened and closed the day for the Pilgrims, swimming the opening leg of Plymouth’s 200 medley relay and the anchor for the Pilgrims’ 400 free relay team, both of which placed sixth. He also finished 10th individually in both the 200-yard Individual Medley and 100-yard breast stroke as Plymouth scored points in 10 of 14 events at the NLC meet.
“I was very pleased with the performances and the way things turned out,” said Plymouth boys swimming head coach Leanne Senter. “We had a couple guys swim well enough that they finished better than where they were seeded at the prelims, and all three of the divers...advanced out of the first round and I had one move on to the finals.”
Facing a stacked NLC field and with no top eight berths returning from the preliminary meet at Concord, Senter challenged the team to continue to drop time from Thursday’s qualifying round and the Pilgrims obliged.
Freestyler Elliott Eads and fellow freshman stroke swimmer Tom Serf made some of the most dramatic cuts in their first conference meet as Eads dropped a combined 2.78 seconds in the 50 and 100 free sprints and Serf dropped a combined 2.14 seconds in the backstroke and breast stroke.
Eads’ fellow sprinter, junior Jared Hill dropped 1.33 seconds in the 100 free and .45 of a second in the 50-yard race, while Brandon Brashere outpaced his preliminary mark in the 100 breast stroke by .18 of a second for a 1:12.18 stop and 14th place there, and Plymouth’s 200 medley and 400 free relay squads cut 1.34 and 2.7 seconds, respectively, from Thursday’s meet.
Fledling Plymouth diver John Slater scored a 264.65 in the diving competition, meanwhile, to finish 15th overall and helped give Plymouth’s eighth-place 200 free relay squad a lift in the anchor position as well.
“Even though all of my guys didn’t make it into the consols, I think that we are sitting well for sectionals,” said Senter. “We went fast enough and did well enough with these times — and we haven’t started to taper or anything yet — that I’d say we’ll be right up there at sectionals.”
Plymouth’s boys will swim in a three-way meet with Culver Military and Bremen at the Academies Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
