Plymouth bows out vs. No. 6 Marian

October 25, 2010

PLYMOUTH — As predicted, the teams with the better serve receive game won, and as anticipated, No. 7 Mishawaka Marian won its fourth straight sectional title while Plymouth and Culver Girls Academy bowed out in the semifinal round of play Saturday at the Class 3A Volleyball Sectional.
Plymouth fell in three competitive games 25-22, 25-19, 26-24 to the defending champion Lady Knights, while CGA also lost in the minimum of games in its semifinal with eventual tourney runner-up South Bend St. Joseph’s.

The Lady Pilgrims gave Marian all it could handle, forcing a total of 20 ties and even leading Marian intermittently, although they still fell in three games at The Rock.
Plymouth head coach Walt Pickerell had stressed that serve receive would be the biggest factor in the match, and trouble in that department led to a 6-0 Marian run early in the final game, and the Pilgrims couldn’t recover despite forcing the game into extra points.
“It came down to serve receive,” said Pickerell. “If you added up the points we gave away with serve receive we would’ve won every game. We just had too many serve receive errors in a row. They’d get up and then we’d catch back up and we’d give up some more serve receive errors.
