Pilgrims, Eagles, Trojans advance at CMA CC Sectional

October 13, 2010

CULVER – Culver Academies, Plymouth, and Triton cross country coaches each think their runners are capable of quicker times.
Thanks to their respective squads’ performances at the Culver Academies Cross Country Sectional Tuesday, those skippers can put those hypotheses to the test.
The Eagles pulled off their third consecutive boys-girls title sweep – the boys by a scant two points – while Plymouth and Triton also transferred both boys and girls clubs to Saturday’s regional meet, also at Culver.
In the girls race, CGA senior Waverly Neer, who clamed seventh place at last year’s state meet, finished with no one near her to capture her third straight individual sectional crown. Neer clocked in with a time of 18:32.3, 1:19.2 ahead of runner-up Andrea Sharfman of Manchester.
“The plan was for (Neer) to run pretty comfortably,” CGA head coach Mike Chastain said. “We wanted her to start slower and increase the tempo as she proceeded, increase each mile. Her first mile was about 6 flat; I think her second mile was about 5:55; and I’d have to check the splits but I think her third mile was faster. I think she stuck to the plan. She had a hard race at Portage, Michigan Saturday. It was a hot race and we didn’t want to wear her out today. I think she looked sharp today.”
