Pilgrims drop 3rd straight at Tippy Valley, 54-43

January 9, 2012

AKRON — The Plymouth boys basketball team is living proof of the old saying “If you always do what you’ve always done, then you will always get what you’ve always got.”
Turnovers, poor shooting from the field and a late attempt at making a comeback failed the Pilgrims a second night in a row as it went down in defeat to the Tippecanoe Valley Vikings 54-43 Saturday night.
The game started out with the two teams trading punches through the first quarter.  Plymouth was able to get a two-point lead on a John Ruff field goal and assist by Kyle Kaser with 2:50 left in the frame. The Vikings answered to retake the lead on a 3-point shot by leading scorer Nick Kindig on the next possession. A foul at the other end of the court and two free throws by Kaser would give Plymouth its last lead of the night at 6-5 with 1:28 left in the quarter as the Pilgrims were unable to control the ball, turning it over seven times in the quarter.
Plymouth came out of the halftime break with more defensive intensity than it showed in the first half.
The Pilgrims were able to hold the Vikings to only two made field goal attempts in the quarter but were called for fouls seven times and put Tippecanoe Valley in the bonus with 2:57 left in the quarter. Plymouth made an offensive push at the end of the period but could only get as close as three points, and Tippecanoe Valley sealed the win by shooting 17-21 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.
Plymouth was led in the loss by 6’9” sophomore center Mack Mercer, who finished the game one blocked shot away from a triple-double with nine to go along with 10 points and 18 rebounds.
Tippecanoe Valley was led in scoring by junior guard Kindig with 29 points, followed by sophomore big man Tanner Andrews with 19.
The Pilgrims are now 6-3 with the third consecutive loss and will look to get back in the win column against the Concord Minutemen at home on Jan 13.
