Pierce St. Bridge essentially complete

December 21, 2011

PLYMOUTH — Residents should be able to travel the new Pierce Street Bridge by the end of the week or sooner.
Mark Hollingsworth - construction engineer on the project - told the Marshall County Commissioners that the original opening slated for last week had been pushed back due to rains and flooding. He told the board that final railings and attenuators would hopefully be in place by Tuesday afternoon and that as soon as they were, the bridge would be opened.
Several things will remain undone on the bridge in the interim such as a final inch and a half layer of asphalt that will have to wait for the warmer weather of spring as well as seeding and landscaping of the area that will also take place at that time.
Otherwise the structure is essentially complete.
The original completion date was set for Nov. 30. Contractors were awarded seven extra days by the Indiana Department of Transportation due to bad weather. Contractors have also applied for additional days mainly due to flooding.
Hollingsworth also presented two change orders for the construction.
The first was for the modification of storm sewers during construction and amounts to $4,296 additional dollars. The second was to adjust wall thickness on the bridge pilings. It was discovered during construction the piling walls were too thin to meet INDOT specifications and pouring concrete to the appropriate thickness added $17,896.
Hollingsworth reported to the Commissioners that other revisions — on piling material and a revision of an animal pathway under the bridge — had resulted in enough savings that even with the change orders the project was currently under budget by around $2,400.
