MIDLAND, Mich. — Phyllis Ann (Seymour) Graham, age 81, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt, passed away at Sylvan Nursing Home in Clearwater, Fla., on April 11, 2013. Phyllis was born on the family farm in Bourbon, to the late Emerson and Ada (Sneff) Seymour, the second of three children.
She played the clarinet and was a majorette at Bourbon High School graduating in 1949 in a class of 32 students. On Sept. 2, 1950, she married the love of her life and high school sweetheart, Donald Lee Graham. In 1953, Don and Phyllis moved to Midland, Mich., where Don began a 33-year career with the Dow Chemical Company. Together they raised a family of four for 23 years in Midland, Mich. before moving to Walnut Creek, Calif., in 1976 and then to Coral Gables, Fla., in 1983. They built a retirement home in Oldsmar, Fla., in 1986, before moving to the Regency Oaks Senior Living Community in Clearwater, Fla. in 2011.
Phyllis will be remembered for her great love of her family, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a devoted homemaker and was an accomplished seamstress. Phyllis loved flower gardening, bridge, crocheting, and various crafts including making teddy bears. She was an early adaptor of home computers, taking classes and communicating with family members and friends. In Florida, she developed a special interest in growing orchids. She loved ballroom dancing with her husband into their senior years. She loved traveling with her husband extensively in Europe, Caribbean Islands and the United States. She volunteered at the Valley Art Gallery in Walnut Creek, Calif. and worked as a voting precinct worker in Midland, Mich., Walnut Creek, Calif., and Oldsmar, Fla. She was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church in Midland, Mich. Her sweet spirit and smile will be missed by everyone who knew her.
Phyllis is survived by her loving husband of 62 years and her children: Dr. Stephen Lee (Lynn) Graham of Houston, Texas, Cynthia Ann (Donald) Hartz of Sanford, Mich., Diane Kay (Paul) Krcma of Johnston, Iowa, Robert Bruce Graham (Jane Van Ness) of Beaverton, Ore. Four grandchildren: Tracy Ada (Douglas) Brubaker and David Conrad (Ann) Bruzewski, and Michael Graham Bruzewski all of Midland, Mich., and Robert Elliot Graham of McKinney, Texas, and great-grandchild, Allison Grace Brubaker of Midland. Mich. Stepgrandchildren: Jeffrey Hartz of Bay City, Mich., Jason (Jamie) Hartz of Huntersville, N.C., and Julie (Jamie) Wheelock of Midland, Mich. Four stepgreat-grandchildren: Kate Hartz of Bay City, Mich., Tegan and Dylan Wheelock of Midland, Mich. and Andrew Hartz of Huntersville, N.C. Also surviving are her sister, Lamora Filson, and brother, Lowell George (Betty) Seymour all of Plymouth, brothers-in-law Eldon and Pauline (Vicky) Graham of Midland, Mich. and Drs. Loren (Patricia) Graham of Cambridge, Mass., and special friends Allen and Rosie Gerard of Tucson, Ariz. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother-in-law Lowell Clyde Filson of Plymouth, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Robert and Chella Graham, of Los Altos, Calif., and father-in-law Ross Graham of Greenfield. Phyllis is also survived by many living nieces, nephews and friends.
The funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at First United Methodist Church with the Reverend Dr. Charles Keyworth officiating, with burial in the Midland City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.
