Tom’s parents, brother Daniel, Aunt Susan Nichter, family friend Brian Dietz , grandmother, Ida, and grandfather, Eugene Chipman, himself a Naval aviator, who Tom said sparked a passion for Naval aviation when he was a child , attended the winging ceremony and the week-long celebrations that followed.
Eugene, who was winged himself 60 years ago in Pensacola, Fla., proudly pinned on Tom’s “Wings of Gold.”
The ceremony concluded with the Navy Flier’s Creed, the last stanza which reads:
“I am a United States Navy and Marine Corps flyer. I have dedicated myself to my country, with its many millions of all races, colors and creeds. They and their way of life are worthy of my greatest protective effort.”
“I ask the help of God in making that effort great enough.”
