August 4, 2012

BOURBON — The Triton High School Performing Arts Department is a comprehensive program that involves students in grades 5-12. The music program offers both instrumental and vocal music performing opportunities.
The instrumental portion begins with the beginning band where students learn basic fundamentals of musical performance. The elementary students have the opportunity to have class in the high school band room. The middle school band is comprised of both seventh- and eighth-grade students. This group continues to use the basic fundamentals learned in elementary school but focus on performance skills. The middle school band members also can participate in the ISSMA solo and ensemble and large group contests.
The high school band is made up of students grades 9-12 and is a performance based ensemble. The students are involved in both marching and symphonic band. Members of these groups are also encouraged to participate in the ISSMA solo and ensemble and large group band contest.
Members of both the middle school and high school bands also have the opportunity to be part of the jazz band that is an extra-curricular offering of the department.
The vocal portion of the performing arts department includes a middle school choir which includes both seventh- and eighth-graders. The purpose of this choir is to learn basic fundamentals of singing and performance. These students perform on a regular basis and also participate in the ISSMA solo and ensemble contest along with the large group contest.
The high school choir is a performance based ensemble which includes participation in all of the ISSMA contests. Other aspects of the choir include the show choir which is a group that sings and dances; this group is open to the school on an audition basis.
The Performing Arts Department also offers the opportunity to be part of the all school musical.  This year’s production is “Willy Wonka.” Triton Schools has also received the “All School Music Award” for outstanding musical performance by the Indiana State School Music Association. The Triton choral and instrumental groups are under the direction of Pete Foster. The student conductor is Nick Damron.
