OSHKOSH, Wis. — Orval “Buck” Sweeney age 89 of Oshkosh, Wis., passed away Saturday morning, Jan. 29, 2011 at Park View Health Center.
Buck was born Oct. 22, 1921 in Salem, Ind., the son of Clotus and Gertie (Hattabaugh) Sweeney. He had three brothers, one sister, and one half-brother.
Oct. 28, 1939, Buck married Clara Walton. They had four children: Danella, Rosalind, Burley, and Mike. June 27, 1964, Buck married Lorraine R. Fauk giving him two stepsons, Ronald and Donald, and they had one daughter, Linda.
Buck served his country during World War II as part of the Seabees building roads and infrastructure in Alaska. After the war Buck took up his lifelong career in the wood working industry. As an employee of General Plywood Corporation, Buck came to Oshkosh to be the general manager of Paine Lumber Company. After leaving Paine Lumber Company, he went to work for Walled Lake Door Company in Richmond, Ind. He ended his career as general manager of Young Door Company in Plymouth. During his working life, Buck was recognized nationaly for some of his innovations and techniques. In 1987 Buck and Lorraine retired to Hampstead, N.C. They returned to Oshkosh later in life, when his wife became ill.
While in Oshkosh, Buck was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Zion Brotherhood and church council in his younger years. Buck also enjoyed watching many sports, especially the Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Brewers. Most of all Buck loved his family and although not being able to visit them as much as he would have liked, they were never far from his thoughts.
Buck is survived by his sons, Burley (Patricia) Sweeney of Elizabeth City, N.C. and Michael Sweeney of New Albany; daughters: Danella (David) Brumleve of Floyds Knob, Ind., Rosalind (Lance) Byrd of New Albany, Ind., Linda (John) Dunzik of Bradenton, Fla.; stepson, Donald (Marianne) Fauk of Oshkosh, Wis.; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Carl, Delbert, and Mike; sister, Elsie Yates; his first wife, Clara; second wife, Lorraine; and stepson, Ronald Fauk.
A memorial service for Buck will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, at Zion Lutheran Church, 400 N. Sawyer Street, Oshkosh, Wis.
A time for sharing memories and support will be held at the church Friday from noon until the time of the service.
