Operation Quiet Comfort fundraiser set for Saturday

September 23, 2010

BREMEN — “They help protect our freedom. They deserve everything we give them,” said Audrey Reed, a member of the Bremen Ladies Auxiliary, host of a benefit dinner to raise funds for local Operation Quiet Comfort campaign.
The event is slated Saturday, Sept. 25, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Bremen VFW and American Legion Post, 1750 W. Plymouth St., Bremen.
Funds from the benefit — which includes “great food,” Reed said, as well as drawings and games — will go directly to Operation Quiet Comfort. Dinner includes a pork chop, tossed salad, vegetable, dessert, and beverage. Tickets are $10 in advance by contacting Reed at 574-546-0566, or Jan Houin at 574-936-1424, or $12 at the door. The group also will happily accept monetary donations to be used to purchase items that are placed in “go bags,” or backpacks given to soldiers.
The bags are packed with personal hygiene items, a CD player and CDs, a puzzle book, reading material, and cards and letters of encouragement from the public showing its support for their sacrifice.
A “freedom quilt” will be on display during the event, too. “Freedom quilts” are those given to soldiers by Operation Quiet Comfort, made from denim blue jeans cut into squares. On the squares are messages of thanks, encouragement and appreciation for the sacrifices made by men and women in uniform. “The quilts are often used to keep our wounded warm and messages remind them that a grateful nation truly cares,” noted Houin, local Quiet Comfort organizer who will talk about the project to interested volunteers during the fundraiser.
Reed, who resides at Oakhaven Apartments in Bremen, started helping make quilt squares out of old blue jeans around a year ago. The squares are then made into quilts for injured soldiers, she said.
