CULVER — Lifelong Culver resident Olive Violet Beck passed away Friday, Dec. 14 at Miller’s Merry Manor in Culver after an extended illness. She was surrounded by family members and her pastor. She was 86 years old.
A strong, sociable lady, Olive devoted herself to her family, her church and her community. She often joined her husband J.C. singing country and gospel songs, harmonizing sweetly in her soft country voice.
Olive Johnson was born Nov. 29, 1926 to Eva (Mitchell) Johnson and Luther Johnson in the village of Maxinkuckee east of the lake. Olive attended school in Culver and graduated from Culver High School in 1944. She married J.C. Beck on May 17, 1945.
Olive was employed at Taylor’s Five and Dime Store and James’ Grocery Store in downtown Culver. She later worked at Grant’s department store in Plymouth and Shirt Shed in Culver. Olive also ran the telephone switchboard at Culver Academies for 11 years before retiring in the 1990s. She was a member of Grace United Church of Christ and served on the Consistory there. She also volunteered with United Way.
Olive was preceded in death by husband J.C. who passed in 2009 and by her son Alan who died in an automobile accident in 1958. She is survived by her daughter Janet Beck Baker of Culver, son Terry Beck (Marcia) of Defiance, Ohio and son Timothy Beck (Vickie) of Valparaiso.
She is also survived by her grandchildren: Donald Baker (Janet Halling) of Culver, Megan Beck of Mary Esther, Fla. and Garrett Heath Beck (Stephanie) of Port Huron, Mich. She is also survived by great-grandsons Graham and Leo Baker of Culver and great-granddaughters Nevaeh and Ava Beck of Port Huron, Mich.
Visitation will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Church of Christ in Culver, with funeral services following at 1 p.m. Burial will follow at Culver Masonic Cemetery.
