NORTH JUDSON — Class 2A No. 6 North Judson got off to a slow start and led by just three points at the half, but the Bluejays used a strong second half to remain unbeaten versus LaVille.
Judson opened the third quarter on a 10-0 run and put up 37 points after the break while holding the visiting Lancers to only 12 in a 67-39 win at Judson Friday.
LaVille head coach Michael Edison said North Judson’s Kendall Hochstedler made the difference in the game the second half.
“He controlled our guards and caused turnovers on four out of five of our first possessions. They went on a 10-0 run in the first minute and a half of play,” he said.
The first half of the game was a different story entirely, with both teams being pretty much neck and neck up until the third quarter.
The score at halftime was 30-27, with Judson (6-0) leading. When the Jays came back from halftime, however, it was a new ball game.
“We had a game plan from the get go; the difference in the second half was that we executed that game plan,” said Bluejays head coach Phil Shabi. “Also, our team leader, Winston Yergler, was in foul trouble during the first half and he came back out during the second half of the game. Kendall Hochstedler did a good job of guarding LaVille’s point guard and John Eckert played solid as well.”
The Bluejays were on fire on both defense and offense during the second half of the game. Multiple team members were getting off good shots and making them, and they were converting from the free throw line. On defense, they were playing solid and causing the Lancers (2-3) to turn the ball over several times. The Jays scored 18 points in the third quarter and held the Lancers to just six points. They continued their stride into the fourth, scoring another 18 points and again holding the Lancers to just six points as LaVille dropped its second straight.
The Bluejays were led by Eckert with 20 points, Yergler with 15, and Mitch Fingerhut with 11 points. Lead scorers for LaVille were Jordyn Williams and Nick Amor with 10 points and Andrew Hostetler with eight points.
Judson moves to 6-0 and will play Hammond Noll Jan. 2, while LaVille slides to 2-3 and will try to snap its two-game skid as it opens Peru Tournament play versus North Miami Dec. 29.
