Nappanee man dies in excavating accident
A Nappanee man died shortly after noon Monday after his excavator rolled over on top of him.
Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Deputies responded with the Nappanee EMS and Fire Departments to the location of 9457 West, County Road 1050 North, Nappanee, after receiving a 911 call at 12:18 p.m. of an excavator that had rolled down a ditch and severely injured a person.
Emergency responders arrived with officers and located Earl R. Miller, 37, 9612 West, County Road 1050 North, beneath a Case mini-excavator.
The Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office was called to the scene and pronounced Miller dead from blunt force trauma after the excavator had struck him as it rolled off the top of a steep ditch embankment where he had been working.
Miller’s son had been working with his father when the accident occurred and ran approximately a half mile to call for help.
Miller had been clearing tree stumps from a ditch embankment approximately a quarter of a mile south of County Road 1050 North. No foul play is suspected in the incident.
