McBee scores 21 as Lady Dragons bow out to Culver

January 21, 2011

LAKEVILLE — Culver Community’s Patrice McBee dug deep into her bag of offensive tricks Thursday night in the Bi-County Girls Basketball Tournament semifinals.
With conventional low-post work, a short jumper, a dribble drive, a roll to the bucket, and a left-handed drive and right-handed finish on the baseline, the 6-foot-3 senior showcased her offensive versatility with a game-high 21 points to lead the Cavs to a 59-34 win over Argos.
Class 2A No. 7 Culver, looking for its first title since 1995, advances to the final round against four-time defending champion Oregon-Davis Saturday at LaVille. Game time is 6:30 p.m.
“McBee probably could have thrown the ball between her legs and it would have went in,” Argos head coach Nick Medich said. “It was her night; everything was working for her.”
The long-limbed, left-handed McBee, who finished 10 of 13 from the field and pulled down seven rebounds, tied the game at 10-10 on a lob with 1:08 left in the first stanza, and connected on her last eight attempts as Culver shrugged off a sluggish start.
Senior post Gwen Zehner chipped in 14 points, including a basket off a lob from Alison Zehner that put the Cavs up for good early in the second quarter. And after relying heavily upon the lob early in the game, Culver started working the ball into the post with better ball movement and bounce passes during the final three quarters.
Also for Culver, point guard Nicole Carnegie added 12 points; Kayla Shaffer contributed eight points and three steals off the bench; and Whitney Sanders dished out four assists.
Culver, though, stumbled a bit out of the gate. Led by a trey apiece from Alex Zechiel and Jami Patterson, the Dragons took a 10-7 lead with 2:27 left in the first quarter.
Scheub then used a 30-second timeout and, with a beefed up defensive effort, Culver ran off a 13-2 stretch to take command.
For the Dragons, Zechiel finished with a team-best 14 points, followed by Patterson with nine points. Kayla Prochno pulled in four rebounds for Argos.
However, the Dragons turned the ball over 24 times – 15 during the first half – and played tentatively with very little movement on the offensive end.
