Marshall County AARP members enjoy annual picnic

July 29, 2011

Margaret Jarkiewicz, Jean Rechtenbaugh, and Stella Wunder, of Plymouth, play a round of bingo before the annual AARP picnic Thursday at the Life Enrichment Center on Harrison St. Jarkiewicz is the group’s eldest member.

PLYMOUTH — Only a few prizes were left on the table, but the players still in the running for a Bingo were not about to give up.
In an impressive display of intense concentration, Jean Rechtenbaugh secured the last win of the round for her friend, Margaret Jurkiewicz.
Now that the game was over, the group of Marshall County AARP members was ready to enjoy their annual picnic. The event was held Thursday at the Marshall County Council on Aging Life Enrichment Center, on Harrison Street.
Since the picnic only comes once a year, the AARP decided not to hold its usual business meeting. Instead, assistant treasurer Tom Mathewson quickly went over a few items before the group dug in to the carry-in meal.
"We usually have more than this," said Rechtenbaugh, gesturing to the 20 or so attendees. "We have a few people sick, or on vacation."
Jurkiewicz said that although the picnic has been held outdoors in the past, the humid weather pushed it indoors more recently.
Over lunch, Rechten-baugh discussed some of the activities of the AARP, including the recent Marshall County TRIAD guest speaker Kallyn Vandenack from the Indiana Attorney General's office, who addressed identity theft.
TRIAD represents an agreement between local law enforcement, senior support services (such as the Council on Aging), and senior citizens themselves. TRIAD sponsors monthly meetings (which take place before the AARP meetings) where seniors are educated on how to protect themselves from scams and crime.
Other activities of the AARP include collecting donations for the Neighborhood Center food pantry, organizing tributes to veterans, and collecting quarters for area fire departments.
AARP meets once a month at the Life Enrichment Center.
